“What happened today between us can never happen again.”
“Because of your sister?”
“Because of my entire family. Kate isn’t the only member with a grudge against the DiSilva family.”
Just his bad luck.
“My parents and I have never done anything to warrant being shunned by them. Our parents were best friends.”
“That doesn’t change what your brothers did or how it’s impacted my family. It’s one thing to deal with you living in the same town. It’s another for them to accept what just happened between us.”
“What happens between us has nothing to do with your family,” he snapped. He was tired of being judged. It wasn’t like she didn’t feel something for him. He lowered his voice and cupped her cheek. “Things can be good between us, Vick. You know it.”
She held his gaze, and he felt her tremble. He leaned forward, determined to convince her to give them a chance.
Her hand shot out and stopped him from doing more than graze her lips. “Stop. Nothing good will come of this.” She rolled off the bed and kept her back to him.
“You’re choosing them over your own happiness?”
She wiped at her face before turning to him.
Despite the tears that dampened her eyes, her answer was clear from the stubborn set of her chin. “What choice do I have?”
“There’s always a choice.”
“And a price to pay. They’re my family. I pick them. I’ll always pick them.”

A Place to Call Their Own
by Dean Pace-Frech
Mainstream (PG13) GLBT, Historical
JMS Books LLC
Frank Greerson and Gregory Young have been discharged from the Army and are headed to their childhood homes. They both defied their parents in 1861 when they joined the Army. After battling southern rebels and preserving the Union of the United States of America, the two men set out to battle the Kansas Prairie and build a life together. Once they find their claim, they encounter common obstacles to life on the Kansas Prairie in 1866: Native Americans, tornadoes, wild animals, and weather.
When a prairie fire destroys their crops and takes their neighbor’s lives, Frank and Gregory are instructed to find their young son’s aunt. Faced with leaving a destroyed claim, the railroad coming through their land, and dwindling funds, Frank and Gregory must decide whether to leave the place they have worked hard to make their own or fulfill their friends' dying wishes.
“You two together, or…” Mr. McAvoy asked with a puzzled look on his face.
Mrs. McAvoy raised an eyebrow, also curious about the situation.
Gregory gave Frank a nervous and mischievous look and answered, “Ah, yes, sir. We planned to each get a claim and build one house for now, help each other out.”
The answer seemed to satisfy both Mr. and Mrs. McAvoy. “That sounds like a good idea. It’d be nice to have a few neighbors around to help with things once in a while. And what I wouldn’t give to have had just one other man to help me with some of the house building and stable. You stay around here, and you’ll need a stable. Wolves and coyotes will get your livestock if you don’t.”
“How did you protect yourself before? This stuff doesn’t get built in a day.” Gregory asked.
“It takes ’em a while to figure out you’re here. And of course, it’s worse in the winter than this time of year. They haven’t been quite so bad the last few weeks, have they?” he directed to his wife.
“No, they calmed down. Hopefully they’ve been preying on the deer that are eating my potato plants.” answered Mrs. McAvoy. “You two want to stay for supper? I’ve got a big pot of rabbit stew on the stove.”
“It’ll be good, I promise. She’s done great cooking whatever I can find for us,” Mr. McAvoy added.
Gregory ignored the invitation. “How’s the hunting around here? You do good during the winter months?”
“Yeah, in the fall it’s the best—the animals are all fat and sassy from the summer. You can tell the bucks from the does, and you don’t have to worry about orphaning a young deer like you do now. There are plenty of rabbits and prairie chickens right now. You can find squirrels…”
“And the meadowlarks do fine, too, in a pinch,” piped in Mrs. McAvoy. “Now, what about supper?”
“We appreciate the offer, ma’am,” Frank spoke up. “But we’re just trying to find us our claims and be done with traveling. We’ve been traveling nearly six weeks now. It has been that long since we had a decent home-cooked meal, but we need to keep moving on today.”
They both remembered the last time they joined anyone for dinner. The McAvoys seemed harmless, but Frank and Gregory were both a bit shy about joining anyone else at this point.
“Yeah, we’re getting close to where we want to settle,” Gregory added. “We appreciate the offer and all, but we just want to keep moving.”
Mrs. McAvoy smiled, turned, and ran into the house with her load of laundry. Neither Frank nor Gregory knew if she was hurt because they declined the supper invitation or just needed to get back to her household chores.
“We understand that. Took us nearly six months to get here from New York, where we come from. We stayed with some relatives along the way, but the missus did appreciate it when we finally stopped here.”
“Well, we appreciate your hospitality and all your help. We should probably get going,” Frank said, glancing at Gregory.
“If you happen to end up around here, don’t be strangers. Just let us know where you’re at,” Mr. McAvoy replied.
“It’s a deal, sir,” Frank said and extended his hand.
Mr. McAvoy walked over and took it. After they were done, McAvoy stepped away from the wagon.
Gregory slapped the reins and yelled “giddyap,” and the horses sprang forward.
A frantic Mrs. McAvoy yelled from inside the house, “Wait!”
Frank grabbed Gregory’s arm to stop him. Gregory pulled back on the reins.
Mrs. McAvoy came out of the cabin with a small basket covered with flour sack cloth.
“This here isn’t much, but maybe it will allow you to rest once you stop for the night. I put two crocks of my stew in there and part of the bread I baked for our supper tonight. I don’t know why I did it, but something told me to make extra bread today.”
“We’re mighty obliged, ma’am. This will help. Now we don’t have to worry about hunting anything for our dinner. We’ll just warm this by the fire and be ready to go,” Gregory spoke up.
“Yes, ma’am. We are getting a bit worn out by this trip,” Frank said. He grinned at Gregory and said, “Hopefully, we’ll be finding our home soon.”
Both men tipped their hats once more, and Gregory got the horses going again.
Dove and Daisy lumbered along for the rest of the afternoon and into the early evening. Before they realized it, the wagon climbed a gentle, gradual grade. The early evening sun blinded them as they reached the crest of the ridge. At the top, Frank looked over his shoulder where the wagon had just been. There he saw the trail left by the wagon and horses in the prairie grass. To the west, a line of trees indicated a creek, river, or some sort of waterway. The sun drenched the entire landscape in its golden hue. He looked at Gregory, and they both knew this was their new home. They had arrived on the homestead.
“Welcome home, Frankie!” Gregory yelled at the top of his lungs.

"This was a very short sweet read! I loved both main characters. Heather and Dominic seemed to click very early on which was great as the book is very short. They were very passionate about their families and doing the right thing. Both of them gave as good as they got. I thoroughly enjoyed the story line; it was different to what I have read before. A wonderful easy read. 5 stars!"

AN EYE FOR DANGER by Christine M. Fairchild
He removed the hat and smoothed back his hair, raining down smiles that flooded me with goosebumps and dread. We stood inches apart. I couldn't move, not away from him, not closer.ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Sam reached, skimming my jawline, hesitating to make contact. I stepped forward, willed him to take up my skin freely. His fingers trickled down my neck. I held to his arm as I consumed details about him I didn't want to forget: how the gold flecks in his eyes matched his sun-kissed strands, how his cheeks flushed when I stared at him, how his brows sank when he hurt. How they were sinking now.
His thumb brushed my lower lip with that lulling stroke. ""For everything you've sacrificed. For him. And for me.""
Lowering his head, Sam enveloped my bottom lip at length with a soft kiss, and then my top lip with the same care. A slow, tender kiss. A goodbye kiss.
My eyes closed. Luke had never said goodbye. One day he was just gone. I could recall his scent, his laugh, the tenor of his voice when he called my name, but I couldn't remember how his mouth felt or tasted. That Luke never had impressed itself. And now Sam was saying goodbye for him. But my body knew the difference.
My eyes blinked open. The kiss had ended, but I'd been lost in the moment, engorged with memories. I gasped for air, not realizing I'd held my breath.
Sam stared down at me, his eyes dilated with hope, waiting for me to wake up from the kiss, from three years of hibernation.
The hat and bag dropped. The door slammed shut. The small distance between his bruised body and my aching one closed.
He engulfed my mouth with moist, voracious lips, as his hand cemented between my shoulder blades, pushing me higher onto my toes to match his force. His tongue delved into my mouth at every angle, but I couldn't match his pace.
In our fervor I nipped his lower lip, sank my fingers into his thick hair, clawed the back of his shoulder, urged my breasts against his chest. His hands slid inside my shirt, moving up and down my spine. The sensation of his calloused fingers seeking my skin dizzied me. We couldn't get close enough. Not with all his damn layers and Kevlar...

The author offers the readers 13 sentences from her story. Enjoy!
He smoothed her hair and rubbed a thick tendril between his thumb and forefinger. “I am Gunnar.” He pronounced the name Goo-nar.
An emblem of the sun, surrounded by a circle, had been branded on the back of his powerful hand. Penny touched the scar while he held a length of her hair, recognizing Freyr’s sacred insignia from her textbooks. “The pain must have been excruciating.” Without thinking, she lifted the old wound to her mouth and laid kisses along its perimeter before pressing a kiss to the icon inside.
Tremors vibrated across her lips when they touched the ancient symbol and her body tingled with the contact. The brand grew warm and then hot against her mouth, though it did not burn. She ran her tongue over the thick scars to erase the heat, and then licked the center, finishing with a tiny swirl.
Gunnar’s gasp of surprise was the last thing she expected when she lifted her head. He released her hair and drew away.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know what got into me. Have I offended you?”
She’d always been popular with men, and comfortable around them, but her behavior with Gunnar was bold, even for her. She sat up. “Am I under some kind of spell?”
Gunnar shook his head. “I used my powers to heal you, but your free will remains intact.”

Divine intervention. That’s all Penny asks. Freedom from overwork and mountainous debt. She sings songs of praise, chants like a yogi, and rubs her belly like Buddha until the crystal charm on her navel shimmers, all hoping to draw the attention of someone—anyone—“up there.”
In the west, beyond the seas, from the place between Heaven and Earth, an immortal hears Penny’s cries. Once a renowned Viking warrior, Gunnar has been cast into eternal servitude by an angry god. Now, while Penny sleeps, he comes to Earth to grant her wishes. But Penny is about to wake up, and so is every desire she’s ever known. To claim their fairy-tale ending, Gunnar must find a way to clear his name. Not only must his sword arm and courage stay strong, but their powerful love must cross the divide of a thousand years.

Excerpt
"A movement by the shed caught her eye and Molly froze. She glanced at the clock on the wall beside the fireplace.
A rush of blood pounded through her temples as she stood. Walking over to the side of the window, she lifted the heavy brocade curtain, making sure she didn't touch the lacy sheer, not wanting her movements to be revealed to whoever was out there.
The figure of a man leaned against the shed, watching the office. Tightness cinched in her chest, as she held her breath. Could he be the one sending the letters?
She kept her eyes focused on the stranger. He was dressed like a local, with a red and black checked flannel shirt peeking out from under a down-filled vest. His worn jeans and scuffed boots resembled every male living in town, but unlike them he looked lethal.
His face was shadowed beneath a baseball cap, his eyes shielded by dark sunglasses. She couldn't make out any of his features.
She let the heavy curtain fall back into place and walked over to the fireplace, reached for the rifle over the mantle, checked for shells then crossed the room to the door.
Opening the front door, she kept a firm grip on the rifle at her side as she yelled, ""What are you doing here?""
The man shrugged. He took a step toward her. Dread lassoed her throat, cinching it closed.
He stepped out of the shadows into the bright sunlight. A navy duffel bag in his hand. Walking toward her he smiled as he removed the glasses drawing her into two, cool-blue pools. ""Long time no see.""
Not nearly long enough. She knew she should be relieved that he wasn't the stalker, but in some ways he was more dangerous.
Her worst nightmare had become a reality. Brock Kingston had come home.

“Miss Stuart, young ladies don’t usually frequent this section of Hookham's.”ABOUT Georgie Lee
The strong male voice startled Charlotte, causing her to drop her books. She spun around to discover Lord Woodcliff behind her, his blue eyes beneath his solid brow fixing on hers with stunning intensity. She’d been so lost in thought she hadn't heard him approach. Now, with him before her, every notion deserted her except for fascination with his smile and the way the light from the windows fell over the solid curve of his shoulders. He stood a good head taller than her, his chest wide and sturdy beneath his well-fitted coat of dark green wool.
He laid his book on the shelf then bent to retrieve hers from the floor. His arm muscle flexed beneath his sleeve as he held the weight of the tomes he stacked in the crook of his elbow. His strength proved as stunning as his sudden appearance, and the pull of his dun colored breeches over the curve of his knee. She shouldn't be admiring him, or allowing him to assist her, but she couldn't help herself. There was something about his confidence and the ease with which he moved which captured her attention.
He paused to examine the slimmest of the tomes then glanced up, one eyebrow arched. “I thought ladies shunned such subjects as surgery and disease?”
His comment snapped her out of her unexpected and unnerving fugue.
“I've heard a great deal today about gentlemen’s expectations of ladies.” Charlotte snatched the book from him. “Gentlemen would do well to learn not all ladies are hen-witted.”
“I’m glad to hear it, for society is already overrun with wet geese.” He rose and beneath the high linen of his cravat, his neck muscles tightened as he held out the stack to her.
Charlotte studied him in an attempt to discern if he was mocking her or if he was serious, but his expression held no hint of the arrogance he’d exhibited at the Royal Academy.

Meet #MFRWauthor @LiviaQuinn & Her First Knight
Meet MFRW Author Livia Quinn.
Livia Quinn is a D.C. native living in Louisiana. Her Storm Lake series was born after a layoff and a little known event called Katrina in 2005. With several interruptions in her career, all involving weather, it’s only natural that storms would be at the center of many of her stories. She's a business owner, professional singer, and salesperson; has been a plant manager, computer trainer, and mail lady.
She's written eight books based in the communities surrounding Storm Lake — an infamous, though fictional lake in Southern Louisiana — Destiny, Larue, Thunderpoint, and Campbell Glen.

Tell Us About Your Writing Schedule.
I write fairly fast but during my seasonal business I have little time so I spend twenty minutes in the tub in the morning with my notebook and continue on my forty-minute drive to work. That's how I completed my most recent book. Unfortunately, revising can't be done in the tub, or on the road ;)
How Do You Develop Your Characters?
Characters come to me in their setting or with their passion and they literally unfold the story to me. My Under-Cover Knights heroes, Luc and Ridge, surprised me with their devotion to others, for causes like disadvantaged teens and Veterans’ needs. Research for Her First Knight hit me so hard I decided in May and November all sales for this book would be dedicated to Wounded Warrior charities.
Do You Include Sex Scenes In Your Books?
I love a good love scene but I don't need the minute details. I'd rather feel their emotions and passion, not that I don't write and read hotter books. Undone was on the erotic side, but my priority was making sure Cass' passion for Elektra came across.
Does Your Husband Read Your Books?
Ha! My husband's input on Her First Knight was about the cover. He couldn't understand why my cover designer couldn't remove Grigoris Drakakis' black leather coat. He said he needed more skin! But he doesn't read paranormal so he's no help there.
Do You Like Hearing From Readers?
I love hearing from my readers and enjoy their input and ideas but ultimately a writer has to write what's in her heart, and my characters tell me their story. I'm just kind of their biographer so there's not a lot I can do. <grin>
Tell Us About Your Latest Project.
I just finished book 4 in the Destiny Paramortals. Blame it on the Moon brings Jack and Tempe's coming of age arc to a head but their story and that of the other characters in Destiny - the paranormal end of Storm Lake - will continue. The further east you go on Storm Lake the less magic is apparent. Although Ridge from Her First Knight did make an important appearance in Blame it on the Moon. It will be available in May followed by a contemporary, the first Thunder Point book in August.
Her First Knight
Under-Cover Knights #2
Contemporary Romance
Campbell Hill Publishing
Ridge Romano was a genius inventor, military contractor and CEO of two billion dollar companies. He was on a mission for vets. Fun was not a word in his vocabulary. So how had he wound up on a stage between two cover models playing strip bingo, with a hundred women crying, “Take it off”?
He’d pay for this.
Buffy was looking for was the face of her franchise. At the conference she’d found her man. The late arrival had that 'je ne sais quoi' that would make her studio an immediate success. She had to have him. There was just one problem. He wasn’t a cover model, had 'more important priorities - veterans'.
Who was she to argue with such a noble cause? Buffy wanted Tucker. Could this be the first time a Calloway was wrong?

"He’s the one, isn’t he?” Her mother’s eyes lit with a strategic fire. “Isn’t he, Lana Jean Calloway?”Buffy hadn’t heard her full name in that tone of voice since she was eight. “No one’s keeping anything from you, Mom. I’m sure if you ask Ridge right now if he’s the one, he’d back out of here quicker than you could say gumbo. Please don’t blow it.” “You knew about this, Mother,” Pamela said.“Mom, it’s not quite time to go shopping for a wedding dress, ‘ya know?” She hugged her mother, but Buffy could tell she wasn’t about to give up. She gave Lillie a what now? grimace and Lillie patted them both on the back.“Come on, ladies. They could go on until next month about the wars and your Mr. Romano’s project but I think they could use a distraction. Buffy, grab the potatoes.”Lunch proceeded without a hitch. Ridge made the rounds thanking everyone for their support and promised to come back one day. This sounded too much like the distant future to Buffy. Shaking Earl’s hand he said, “Sir, my company has a more advanced prosthesis. I can arrange it for you if you’re interested; it’s lighter and more flexible than the version you have.” Earl narrowed his eyes and said, “Son, I’m ninety-three years old. This old arm and I do just fine. Getting a new one at this stage of my life would be like a woman gettin’ fake boobs when she’s past her prime.”“Old coot,” Ridge thought he heard Lillie say under her breath. “Watch it, Dad,” said Robert who just put his arm around a steaming Lillie and hugged her. “Ignore him, sugar.”“Now, Earl,” Roberta said, and her look seemed to be the only thing that made him quail.Buffy’s great-grandfather shook Ridge’s hand and, looking around him at Buffy, said, “You chose a fine man, youngin’.”Silence.Ridge turned slowly to look at Buffy. She shook her head, mouthed, Wasn’t me. She watched with an impending sense of doom as her mother put her hand on Ridge’s shoulder. “Might as well buy the ring, dear. When a Calloway tells you, you’re the one, it’s like saying, “If I tell you the moon is made of green cheese, get your crackers.”Buffy’s head sank into her hands. Why had she thought this picnic could take place without a bomb going off?

Meet #MFRWauthor @LoreleiConfer, An Uptown Girl and a Cowboy!
Meet MFRW Author Lorelei Confer.
Lorelei Confer lives on a peninsula in the mid west coast of Florida with her husband, two cats, and AJ, her long haired Chihuahua.
She wrote her first story in the fourth grade in the form of a play which actually was produced by her teacher for parents and students. She continued writing and majored in English in College. She practices every day to improve her craft.
I wrote my first story in the form of a play when I was in the fourth grade. The teacher liked it so much she produced it, using students as actors and invited all the parents to the assembly. It was something to do with fear of going to the doctor.
An author of romantic suspense she loves reading almost as much as writing. She has filled her book shelves with her favorites, i.e. Harlan Colban, Eliza March, Johanna Lindsey, Kathy Carmichael, Terri Garey, Karen Rose, LuAnn Rice, and Bobbi Smith just to mention a few, as well as all the classics.
A lot of my personality and my life experiences are in my writing, but not all. I've never been trafficked as a sex slave, or thrown off a cliff, left to die, or found a murdered body. The places I've visited many times such as Jackson Hole, WY are in my writings.
I was forced to retire early due to health issues and really thought a lot about my life and what might be in store for me in the future. I had ideas and dreams and bits of dreams that I had to get out of my head. I started writing them in one of my journals and soon after put something together resembling a good story. In 2006, I joined RWA and the local chapter of RWA, TARA, and from there knew the next step was submission. After many rejections, and with some tweaking I received a contract for the first series, The Deadly Series.

Tell Us How You Got The Idea For Your Most Recent Book.
An Uptown Girl and a Cowboy, the second in the Saddle Creek series, started with an idea about what happens to high school friends after high school. You have nothing in common anymore but do you remain friends? I thought about men in particular, they lose touch so easily and I came up with the idea about four grown men who each went their own way after high school: one went to college, one bought the horse ranch he worked at, one went into the military and one into police work; yet they reconnected as 'brothers' and all settled down in the shadows of the Grand Teton Mountains where they all grew up. This book is the story of the college grad, Elliott and Sam (Samantha). Elliott is an outfitter with a store of sports gear and a planned schedule of events, i.e. float rafting down the Snake River. He works in Jackson but lives outside in a small town of Saddle Creek. Rosie's Diner is in the center of town where he runs into Sam, an uptown girl from New York City all the way, a wanna be wildlife photographer. They hit it off but unknowingly trouble has followed her there. They both experience tremendous emotional strife before they find each other.

Samantha Williams, a New York City girl, wanna be photographer, stumbles into Rosie’s Diner in Saddle Creek, Wyoming, outside Jackson Hole. Disheveled from a horrid travel day, Sam finds the only seat available is at the counter beside a cowboy—a burly, staggeringly handsome, strong-muscled cowboy, who she is immediately attracted to and who has some baggage of his own.
Elliott Bouchard, an Outfitter and trainer of therapy horses, thinks he already found his one true love and buried her. He feels responsible for his wife’s death, until he meets Samantha Williams. He wants her for himself; to protect her, not only from the raw elements of the west but from someone following her who wants her gone.
After Sam’s life is threatened, due to murderous evidence she unknowingly has in a picture, Elliott comes to her rescue. But will he be there in time?

EXCERPTMad as hell, she stepped outside. She booted the car door hard. It closed, making a loud noise that echoed in the night quiet. Steam whistled out from beneath the hood and the front tires. She stepped back onto the road, expecting the vehicle to go up in flames at any minute. Walking to the rear of the vehicle, she kick-boxed the back tire.
Remembering her bags in the car, she quickly opened the passenger door and grabbed them, and then stepped away. “You wanted the wide, open spaces, girl,” she muttered. “This is all part of the journey, so deal with it.”
Twisting side to side, she looked up and down the road, but didn’t see another car coming either way. Damn it. She would have to walk. After all, it was only two miles to the nearest town. The sound of her heels on the asphalt sounded like gunshots as she headed toward the silhouette of the towering mountains looming in front of her. Her eyes, now adjusted to the dark, scanned the dim area. No buildings nearby, no lights at all. She shivered. The air, cooling off now since the sun had gone down, would only get colder. She longed for her heavy jacket she’d placed in one of her missing suitcases.
No stores in sight. So isolated. No barn or shed for shelter. No hotels, or motels, no open-all-night 7-Elevens, no gas stations, no shopping malls, no people, and no traffic to flag someone for help. How do people live out here?
She twisted her foot on a small rock on the road, kicking it aside, and heard a crack. She put her now heelless shoe onto the pavement, glanced down, and perused the damage. Moaning at her costly mistake of ruining a pair of expensive shoes, she reached to the ground and picked up the heel. She was reminded of the movie Romancing The Stone. She took off her other shoe and slammed it against the blacktop. Nothing! The damn heel would not come off.
