REVIEWS
Amazon Reviewer
I was gifted a copy of this book for an honest review. The story was wonderful, the characters were so real I found myself holding my breath hoping for things to work out for them. The chance to change your life around and make a better person of yourself was a good message. I will be looking for more from this author.

What a truly SAILORRIFIC story! This is one ABSO-LOVING-LUTELY story that entranced me from the start with its DELIGHTFUL & BABYTACULAR storytelling!! It’s filled with laughter, love, family, friends, sorrow, second chances, surprises, hope, well-developed storylines, multifaceted characters and so much more! A beautifully written, happy feeling kind of story that left me with warm fuzzies!

EXCERPT
“I’ve never seen you at a party before. I thought you were a good little girl.” His teasing voice sent thrills throughout her body.“Today’s my birthday.” Isabelle snuggled closer to him. His body seemed to surround hers.“So, does that make you legal today?”Isabelle nodded vigorously then groaned. Her head swam from the movement. Maybe, just maybe she’d had a bit much to drink. Lee would take care of her though. He’d promised.“But not legal for drinking yet.”Isabelle pouted then sniffed.“So what? Most of the people here aren’t twenty-one.”“Doesn’t make it right.”Isabelle craned her head around to look at him. Surprised at the hard note in his voice.“But you’ve been drinking since you were in high school.”“Again, doesn’t make it right. So, you decided to cut loose now that you’re an adult?”The small smirk at the side of his mouth fascinated her. Somehow the tip of her finger made its way there. His lips were strong but soft, warm against the softness of her finger. The scruff around his mouth prickled her finger as he rubbed his face against it.“Don’t play with fire, little girl.” He nipped the tip of her finger as he winked at her, sending a zing through her body.Isabelle giggled. Normally she thought herself out of Lee’s league, but tonight that didn’t bother her in the least. She’d had too many jello shots to care. Snuggled in his arms, his hands on her affected her more than any bit of alcohol could. Combining them gave her a warm glow.Isabelle wiggled, the trail of his fingertips tickling her neck and circling her ear. She could feel her nipples tightening, glad for her push up bra. It made her boobs look fabulous, but was thick enough to hide her body’s reaction.

It's an OUTBREAK by #MFRWauthor Veronica Scott @VScottTheAuthor!

MFRW author Veronica Scott released Star Cruise: Outbreak.
Dr. Emily Shane, veteran of the Sector Wars, is known as “The Angel of Fantalar” for her bravery under fire. However, the doctor has her own war wounds–severe PTSD and guilt over those she failed to save.

Persuaded to fill a seemingly frivolous berth as ship’s doctor on the huge and luxurious interstellar cruise liner Nebula Zephyr, she finds the job brings unexpected perks, including Security Officer Jake Dilon, a fellow veteran.

A mysterious ailment aboard the Zephyr begins to claim victim after victim … and they must race against time and space to find the cause and a cure! Trapped on a ship no spaceport will allow to dock, their efforts are complicated by a temperamental princess and a terrorist–one who won’t hesitate to take down any being in the way of his target.  If anyone’s left when the disease is through with them…

EXCERPT
The portal to the corridor burst open, and Mr. Enzell struggled into the lobby, half carrying his wife and surrounded by their white-faced children. Syl was sobbing in great gasps, and the boys’ faces were set in expressions of terror. The oldest had a blood-soaked wad of cloth pressed to his nose. Mrs. Enzell’s head lolled, and she looked as if she was crying tears of blood. Clint immediately moved to support the woman on the other side, calling for Emily as he did so.

“Seven hells, here we go.” Emily was right behind them as the men helped Mrs. Enzell to an exam room and onto the bed.

“Trynna started bleeding a few minutes ago, Doctor,” Mr. Enzell said as medical personnel hurried to get their new patient hooked up to monitors. “She said she was dizzy and then—then her eyes—she was—the tears were blood. And next thing I knew, my son’s nose was bleeding. What’s going on?”

Emily caught Relba’s attention. “Call Bevar in, stat. I’ve got this, Vicente. Take the boy into room two and get him in bed, please.” As her staff moved to carry out the orders, Emily busied herself setting up the intravenous flow of fluids for Mrs. Enzell and added a basic clotting factor. “This is apparently a complication of the intestinal virus, Mr. Enzell. Do you have any symptoms?”

He blinked. “I’m fine. Marc, my oldest, he’s not doing too well.”

“My nurse is taking care of him right now. And Syl? And the middle child?” Emily spared a glance for them.

He clutched the kids closer to him. “Fine so far. Scared for their mom and Marc. How can bleeding from the eyes be related to an upset stomach?” Mr. Enzell’s voice was rough.

“Sometimes an infection affects different areas of the body at different times.” She tried to keep her own tone soothing.

“So you’ve seen this before? You know what to do?” He stepped closer to the bed and took his wife’s hand. “How long before she’s better?”

Book Spotlight: The Backdoor Billionaire's Bride @RozLee_Author #MFRWauthor

Ford Adams had led a charmed life, but if he doesn’t figure out how to make the equivalent of a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, and sell a boat-load of them, he and his mother might find themselves flipping burgers. Determined not to let that happen, he’ll need all the help he can get—especially from his sexy new business partner. If he can get her to take a chance on his crazy new idea, then maybe he can convince her to take a chance on him.

Becky Jean Parker’s life has been anything but what she’d imagined it would be, but she’d been content until a recent turn of events once again left her no choice. Unless she wants to wallow in bankruptcy for the rest of her life, she’ll have to go along with her new business partner’s insane plan and pray he knows what he’s talking about. The only thing crazier than Ford’s plan to sell sex toys is her attraction to him. Typical of her life, she’d had no choice but to fall for the one man she can’t have.

A plan so crazy, it just might work and save the business. But can these two see the opportunity right in front of them for love?
EXCERPT
If she were to draw the man of her dreams, he’d be Ford Adams. She’d always been drawn to tall, dark, testosterone-overloaded men. If he had an ounce of compassion in his bones for his new employees, she might consider acting on her attraction, but he didn’t, so she wouldn’t. Then there was the part about him being her boss. She’d checked for a wedding ring, and his father would have mentioned his son becoming engaged. So, unless he had a girlfriend back home….The expiration date on their professional relationship couldn’t have been stamped in more indelible ink, so there wouldn’t be any real harm in sleeping with him. It wasn’t like he could promote her from unemployed to employed. Only her scruples stood in the way of a fling with the sexiest man in Butte Plains. She didn’t do flings. She’d had a brief relationship with a guy she’d met in the library her sophomore year of college. The chemistry between them had been off the charts, but David had been immature, skipping classes in order to party. He’d flunked out of school the spring semester and moved home to Colorado. Last she’d heard, he’d become a ski instructor at one of the smaller resorts in the winter, living off his parents the rest of the year. Her scruples were there for a reason—to protect her from doing stupid things.

"Don't you think it's kind of shitty to be having drinks with one woman while you're still engaged to another?""
""You looked upset in the elevator, and I thought it would be nice to have a friendly drink. We're going Dutch, remember? I can have female friends. What have we done that's inappropriate? Nothing.""
Micky had to admit that, for her, it wasn't nothing. And she doubted that the pull of attraction went one way. She contemplated grabbing her purse and stalking out of the bar.
""We've flirted,"" she admitted, which only served to amuse him further.
""Really? You seemed pretty pissed off the other night even though I'm not entirely sure why.""
""That's funny because the thing that pissed me off then has turned out to be true. You casually talked about being into all manners of women. So many women, so little time, I guess. Now you tell me that your called-off engagement might not be called-off. It makes me wonder if that's all some elaborate tale to keep me thinking you're available when you're not,"" Micky snapped, the control she had over her ire dissipating.
""Believe me, I'm not one to date more than one woman at a time. Most guys may say they want lots of women in their life, but trust me, I don't need the drama.""
""Women bring drama?""
""Not necessarily, but I've found that the level of crazy in a man's life rises exponentially with the number of women."" He sighed and started to speak again, but Micky cut him off.
""I see,"" she said, looking around the bar for the waiter.
""No, wait. I just mean that juggling women is a bad idea and a habit that I broke myself of a long time ago.""
""Have you? Because I don't care what you say. I've seen the way you look at me, and it is most definitely inappropriate if you're promised to someone else. Is it so hard to wrap up one relationship entirely before looking for your next conquest?""
The green in Nick's eyes deepened. He leaned over the table.""You're right. I'm attracted to you. I'd love nothing more than to drag you upstairs to one of the rooms in this hotel and strip those uptight business clothes off of you so that I can finally know what color your nipples are. And what they taste like."

#Historical Romance Book Spotlight: Caroline and the Captain @Maggi_Andersen #MFRWauthor

Caroline and the Captain
Historical Romance

Captain Nicholas Bonham of Wellington’s Peninsular Regiment, the 52nd Light Infantry, returns from fighting the Napoleonic wars to see his brother laid to rest. A skilled rider, George’s death remains a mystery, as does the parlous state of his finances. Debenham Park must be sold unless Nicholas can find a swift solution.

George’s former fiancée, Miss Caroline Mirringham, harbors a secret. She has trusted no man except her father and George, and now considers her future to be a desolate one. When her father proposes that Caroline marry Nicholas, she is filled with dread. The captain is nothing like his amiable brother. He looks altogether too strong and harsh. He would demand far more from her than she could give.

Freedom. That’s all Lady Honor Baxendale wants—for her sisters and for herself. Honor has a bold plan to become financially independent, using a skill she learned at her father’s knee. She seeks the help of a solicitor and is pleased with her choice…as long as she can resist the solicitor himself.
EXCERPT
"With a glance at the overcast sky, Nicholas stood with her on the bank before an expanse of rippling grey water, observing the water birds swimming and diving into the murky depths. The breeze smelled of mud and rotting vegetation. Why were they here? If they were to tackle this apparently thorny subject, they could have done it in relative comfort in the drawing room.
He grew annoyed. Something must be done to stir this difficult lady into revealing more of herself. He cleared his throat.
Without warning, the skies opened. In a few minutes, they’d be drenched to the skin.
“Come this way,” Miss Mirrington called, a blurred figure in the misty rain, running ahead of him. Farther along the shore, a marble columned gazebo offered some shelter. She was quite fleet of foot, picking up her skirts and showing a good deal of slim calf, her bonnet dangling by its ribbon. Wishing himself elsewhere, Nicholas loped along beside her.
They ducked into the shelter of the arched roof, and stood gazing at each other. Nicholas took out his handkerchief and offered the cambric square to her.
She declined his offer with a shake of her head, pushing back a wet lock of hair and settling her bonnet on her head, the soggy daisies adorning it now drooping sadly.
Nicholas wiped the rain from his face, congratulating himself on his remarkable restraint in resisting the temptation to say he told her so. He should be angered by this ridiculous display of bad manners, but was distracted by the thin muslin of her gown clinging to her body, exposing the jutting shape of her full breasts. His gaze roamed to where the damp dress pressed against her slim thighs outlining an enticing curve at the base of her stomach. His body tightened and he looked away disconcerted. With all that had happened, he hadn’t even thought about sex for far too long.
“You’ll catch cold.” Unsettled by his inappropriate thoughts, he shrugged out of his coat and placed it around her shoulders, wondering if she’d reject this gesture also.
“Thank you.” She was so slender she almost wrapped his coat around herself twice. He regretted losing that beguiling view.
“I suppose you know why I’ve come,” he said, determined to get to the point before they both came down with pneumonia.
Her damp, dark-blonde hair framed a heart-shaped face, and a pair of intelligent grey eyes studied him. “Father did mention it.”
“Then we should talk about it, don’t you think?”
“I expect so,” she said without a shred of enthusiasm.
“First, there is something I need to ask you,” Nicholas said.

Dawn Tomasko tells where her story ideas come from.
Dawn Tomasko lives in New England with her family. Now a published author, Dawn's book Tides of Hope, first in a contemporary romance series set on Nantucket Island, MA is available on Amazon. Besides writing every spare minute, she works in the medical field, loves spending time with her husband, grown children and two grandsons. She reads romance fiction constantly, and has been known to read a book a day. Longtime membership in Romance Writers of America has given her countless opportunities to learn her craft and network with other writers.

website  |  facebook  |  goodreads

My ideas can come from any place or time, experience, even a song. One small thought can fuel an entire project. I have been writing since I was a kid, but seriously writing romance for over 10 years. A great deal of my personality and slices of life experiences are in the writing, however, my characters are their own people, with their own histories, personalities and goals.

Tides of Hope is a book I wanted to write for women in particular. Sara's marriage fails, and the close relationship she has with her daughter is in serious jeopardy. Saying 'yes' to everyone but herself for so long leaves her wondering who she is, and what she wants from life. Gabriel, the sexy male protagonist in the story, makes everything she thinks and feels come into question. He pushes her boundaries, and his presence in her life takes her farther than she ever dreamed possible.

Targeting the 30 plus reader; a story about second chances "It's exciting to publish Tides of Hope, the first novel in a contemporary romance series.  It's set on Nantucket, MA, an historic, unique island I fell in love with a long time ago.

Sara Shepard is refashioning her life after giving it all to her family, job and home.  With her daughter off at college and a failed marriage behind her, it's time to get back to basics. After years of saying yes to everyone and ignoring her own needs, Sara is ready to explore a new future, and do the things she's always wanted to do.

Billionaire playboy Gabriel Donovan finds his family business unfulfilling. He passes the reigns to his younger brother.  Now that he's following his passion professionally, he's ready for a meaningful personal relationship.

When their paths cross and they are forced to spend time together, neither can deny the explosive chemistry between them. Soon their relationship goes beyond the mere physical, and an element of danger puts more than their hearts on the line.

Tides of Hope, Book 1

Follow Sara Shepard to stunning Nantucket Island. Feel the sea breezes and walk perfect beaches in the one place she truly feels at home.

After her estranged husband is medically discharged from the Marines suffering from PTSD, life becomes unsafe. With her marriage over, and her relationship with her daughter in shambles, she starts over on the island. After years of saying yes to everyone and ignoring her own needs, Sara is ready to explore a bright new future, and do the things she's always wanted to do. Without a man.

Billionaire playboy Gabriel Donovan suddenly walks away from it all. Now that he's following his passion professionally, he feels ready to focus on a meaningful relationship. Being away from the drama tearing his family apart is an added bonus.

Gabriel is hired to restore the beach cottage Sara is renting. From the time you open the book, experience the explosive attraction between them.

When their relationship goes beyond physical, a heart pounding element of danger puts much more than their hearts on the line." Sexy, humorous contemporary romance novel in a beautiful island setting. Plenty of conflict, well developed characters and first in a series.       BUY LINK - FREE with Kindle Unlimited!

Stacy's 13 sentence excerpt
“How blind are you without glasses?” Dylan persisted.

“You wouldn’t want to drive with me.”

“How about if you’re walking around a building? Are you in danger of hurting yourself?”

This interview had taken the Mad Hatter Freeway from Fairy Tale Land into Wonderland where nothing made a damn bit of sense. Did this guy have a glasses fetish, like those weirdoes with shoe fetishes?

“I should be okay. I take them off for special occasions.” In fact, Jaine’s older sister Bree, who was getting married in August, remarked just last week, “You are losing the glasses for my wedding pictures, right?”

What the hell. She’d be a good sport and hope Dylan would be so grateful to pick the brain of a real, flesh and blood, bespectacled person that he would appoint her marketing director. Jaine removed her glasses and the fine details of her surroundings fuzzed. She nodded toward the framed print hanging on a side wall, the picture a wash of symbols and colors.

#MFRWauthor Mahlee Ashwynne gets ON TARGET on #Thursday13

MFRW author Mahlee Ashwynne hosts Thursday13 today with her latest release.

About the author:
"Writing has been an integral part of my life. I have many plots in the pipeline ... so many and only one life! But I hope to get as many as I can out there either self published or through publishers.
I fell in love with the medieval era. So much fiction that can be interwoven between facts and real people of history! The futuristic aspect of what might be in science fiction drew me like a magnet. I pre empted the popularity of supernatural fiction too with my love for that genre. What I write now reflects my interests.
"

An assassin needs anonymity, loose ends tied up. Svanger slayers have no room for sentiment. Until one woman cracks his icy veneer.

Ace reporter Chaz Halyssion is witness to the assassination of the King of Malthusen. She has it recorded. As one of the few off-worlders there she is under immediate suspicion and on the run. Problem is the real assassin knows she can identify him but he needs her to help him get off-world.

Aldien is the last of the legendary Chameleords. The best at his job in the galaxy. He never leaves anything to chance. Chaz is his last option for escape. She dies once her usefulness is over.

In his darkness Chaz sows a thread of light and hope Aldien needs to extinguish. With regret. In the end he has to choose. He has two options. Kill her, or mind-wipe her and walk away from her forever.

The author shares 13 sentences from On Target:
1 Her family, for all its status and importance, wouldn’t stand by her or disrupt their lives for her well-being.
2 Somehow she needed to glide through the night, unrecognised, and make it to board the starflight home
3 As a Svanger slayer he must preserve invisibility, nothing to connect him to a completed mission.
4 Before she hit the floor the same arms that held her captive caught her and lifted her against a leather-clad chest.
5 “My murder. Or is rape your motivation? That’s what you want,” she spat out in a bitter whisper.
6 “It’s a long ride to the starport. You won’t be able to evade capture and detention alone. Not many survive questioning, particularly where it concerns the death of their king.”
7 “Yeah, right. Obviously you have something bigger than your ego they desire. Your natural charm leaves much to the imagination.” The fiend was enjoying this.
8 “Listen closely. I’m telling you only once. This day has been hell. I got squashed in crowds, singed by stray laser fire, turned into a fugitive, ran until my lungs gave up, found myself a seedy room, attacked by you, then my senses assaulted and aroused.” She flexed her nails into his skin to emphasise her demand. “ I want. You give. Got it?”
9 By taking his body unconditionally she seduced his mind.
10 “Strange woman. Naked you didn’t have any pretensions. Dressed, you have reservations about getting up close. I don’t think either of us is in a condition to indulge in wild uninhibited sex in this tight space. And you are the one in danger of succumbing to an illness.”
11 “Chameleord. It gave my race the means to disguise themselves in other appearances, including a change of eye colour. Mine are predominantly blue-based. However, I can achieve amber, brown, emerald greens and any other variation I can see.”
12 There was no room for sentimentality or any other emotion. She had to die.
13 Damned if he killed her, damned if he let her live. Either way there was a wound within him that would never heal."

Somewhere between love and tomorrow is forever!

REVIEWS
"I wept at the end of the book for more than one reason. I was ready for the end of the series but I still want more. I loved this book the most because it pointed out the failure of resolution. It also pointed out that the north held their own prejudices. The most meaningful quote for me was when Jo reflected, ""...life is not about making an impact on the world as we know it, but on the lives of those you love. I wonder what impact I have made..."" This series is definitely the best I have ever read regarding the War Between the States. It was gripping, romantic, suspenseful and historical. A story well-woven. START with book one. You must! It will be worth it!" - C. Roberts, Amazon Reviewer

"From the very beginning to the end of the 4th book this was hard to put down. The characters and story line were we'll developed and held my interest throughout. I looked forward to the last book and was concerned I might forget some of the story but not to worry. You were able to tie it all together easily. I also loved the ending. Don't cry over many books but this one sure brought on the tears." - Amazon Reviewer

EXCERPT
“Cullen!” she cried.
He stood for a moment and stared at her. His eyes grieved. Understanding his hesitation, her eyes widened. “Oh, Cullen, tell me it is not so.”
He rushed toward her. Taking her by the elbow, he uttered, “Come. We will find privacy.”
Jo hurried beside him, her small steps barely in step with his. He did not slow until they reached the Battery.
Standing against the backdrop of the Charleston harbor, utter wretchedness assaulted her, physically weakened and mentally broken. Her nerves were shaken; she made no effort to conceal her feelings.
His eyes lit upon her. She could take no more. “Don’t leave me,” she pleaded. “I can take anything but the knowledge you don’t want me.”
He reached over and caressed her face. “It has nothing to do with my feelings toward you.”
“Papa…Papa wants me…to marry…Andrew,” she said, desperately trying to find her words. She clutched his hand. “I cannot…not when I love you.”
“Oh, my sweet magnolia, I wish things were different. Your father took a great effort to explain your situation. It is complicated. It tears at the ties that bind between honor and duty. If I gave in to my desires, I would sweep you up North.”
“Please, Cullen, I will go.”
He shook his head. “Our love would change. Over time, our passion will turn to resentment, then, God forbid, apathy. I could not live with that. It is best if what we had becomes a remembrance.”
A sudden anger surged through her. She pushed away from him. “Go then! I care not. You are no more than a coward. No better than anyone else in my life. Promises made, only to be broken. Hold on to your honor and duty and know I will give myself to another!”
For a breathless moment, the world stilled. The ocean waves pounded against the stone wall, spewing water all around them. She became oblivious of everything around her except Cullen.
Suddenly, she felt his hand around her waist. He drew her into his arms. He leaned down and kissed her. He deepened the kiss. She couldn’t think; she could only feel…
“I’ll be damned if another touches you,” he whispered against her lips. “I can’t fight this. I choose you, always you.”
ABOUT Jerri Hines
I'm a Southern gal that has lived the last thirty years near Boston with my Yankee husband. The funny thing is that as a Southerner I know I'm Southern; he hasn't a clue he's a Yankee. I believe in love and the power it holds. It is the reason I write romances. My fascination for history has inspired many of my books including the Winds of Betrayal and Tide of Charleston Series both set during the American Revolution. My Civil War saga, Southern Legacy, is my latest series. It is a serial made up of Belle of Charleston, Shadows of Magnolia, Born to Be Brothers and the dramatic conclusion, The Sun Rises.

Have You Read #MFRWauthor Rebecca Hunter's Stockholm Diaries?

Meet MFRW Author Rebecca Hunter.
Rebecca is a writer, editor and translator who has always loved to read and travel. Rebecca has, over the years, called many places home, including Michigan, where she grew up, New York City, San Francisco, and, of course, Stockholm, Sweden. After their most recent move from Sweden back to the San Francisco Bay Area, she and her husband assured each other they'll never move again.

Well, probably not...

How did you become an author?
I've always wanted to write books, but even back in college I was already telling myself, ""you're not good enough."" Fast forward... well, a few years. Still wanted to write books. Still didn't think I was good enough. Finally, I decided that it didn't matter anymore whether I thought it was good enough!

What is your writing life like?
I'm a first-thing-in-the-morning kind of writer, and I have a daily word count that feels very manageable. And I very rarely miss a day. I'm not the introverted stereotype of a writer: I'm pretty social, and I crave a daily dose of conversation, but I also need a good dose of solitude during the day. I generally write a book in 4-5 months... and then there's the revisions. I'm usually working on writing a new book while revising another one. I write both non-fiction and fiction under two different names, so as you might imagine this can get a little chaotic. But it seems to work for me. I guess I'm what Isaac Asimov called a "serial monotasker"!

What other type of books have you written?
I first published poetry in my early twenties, but I decided I wasn't good enough to continue (note a common thread?). Over the years, I've written a bunch of non-fiction pieces and worked as a high school/community college English teacher, so I guess you could say that my foot was in the door, but I was still just peeking in.

How did you come up with your recent series idea?
My husband is Swedish, and we have lived in Sweden twice. Over the years, I have met many, many ex-pats who have wonderful and unique, against-all-odds kinds of love stories with Swedish men... so the series was born.

Finally, about four years ago, I decided to give fiction a try. It was a mystery with multiple perspectives that dissolves into a complicated mess, but out of its ashes rose the Stockholm Diaries series!

“Du,” he said under his breath. Then he asked, “Are you American?”
His eyes were even more intense up close. Something about their color drew her in—in fact, they were not unlike the colors she had tried to capture with her camera only minutes before. In another light, she might not have noticed them, further hidden behind a few days of stubble and a bruise on his cheek that she hadn’t seen earlier. But he looked at her again in the same way he had in the park, a way that made her suddenly feel his entire presence. And her own. And just for a moment, she forgot everything else.
He had asked her a question, Caroline reminded herself, searching for what it was. About being American.
“Yes, I am,” she said.
“That’s why you didn’t say anything,” he said softly.
She assumed he was talking about the park, about why she didn’t respond to Baseball Cap’s provocation. But Caroline didn’t want to think about Baseball Cap right now.
Instead she nodded and then added, “And I forgot my keys again.”
While the self-locking door on this flat was supposed to be a helpful safety feature, there were clearly downsides to the set-up. Especially since it was too early to wake up Veronica for the spare key. Luckily, her friend had shown her the trick to breaking in if this ever happened. The door handles were different from the knobs she was used to in her Michigan apartment: These were three-inch rods that opened when pulled down. If the top bolt lock wasn’t fastened, a slim arm could slip through the mail slot and reach for the handle. If that arm was long enough. It was time to find out.
Determined to focus on the dilemma at hand and not the formidable man only a few feet away from her, Caroline knelt down next to the door and shimmied her forearm through the mail slot. It barely fit, and she could feel the metal scraping at her skin. Suddenly, half way into the pro-cess of breaking in, she again became keenly aware that this strange man was watching her with interest. This large man with intense blue eyes. She turned back to him, and he seemed to read her hesitancy.
“Don’t worry. There’s no way I could fit my arm through there,” he said with a chuckle. They both looked down at his long, muscular forearms, easily twice the size of Caroline’s. “I just want to see if you can do this.”
She stretched her arm out as flat as possible, working it slowly through the slot. Finally, her elbow crossed through to the inside, and she bent her arm up, reaching around. Nothing but the wooden door. After a few minutes of groping, Caroline gave up. Her arm wasn’t long enough.
Slowly, she dragged her arm out and sighed. Then she looked up, once again conscious of the man’s presence. He was still watching her from only a few feet away with a look she couldn’t quite read—amusement and something else.
“Wait here,” he said, as if she had any other choice.
This time, his key found the keyhole, and the door to his apartment swung open. She watched as he retreated down an empty hall. Every Swede she had met so far had spoken English with a sophisticated-sounding British accent, the Swedish school standard, apparently, but this guy’s English was clearly American and sounded comfortable. He must have some connection there, she thought, judging from his reaction to her accent. But before she had a chance to think more about it, he reappeared with a long, wooden spoon in his hand.
“Try this. You can hook the handle with it,” he said, handing the spoon to her. “Someone might as well get use out of it.”
The corner of his mouth twitched up into a little smile, and she couldn’t help but smile back. Caroline knelt back down and wedged her arm through the opening again, spoon in hand, until her elbow passed through to the other side of the mail slot. So far, so good. The handle of the spoon should be long enough if she could get the angle right. She waved it around, but it just swished and banged on the wooden door. Closer, she told herself. She swung the spoon a little harder, but she hit the handle sooner than she had expected. With a clang, the spoon fell out of her hand.
