As a donor-surrogate, what does one do when fate changes the plan and claims the lives of the intended parents? If you're selfless, strong-willed Erika Washington, you mount a defense to keep your baby.

Entrepreneur Booker Templet, owner of Templet's Tasty Tails, secretly agrees to help his first cousin. However, unfortunate circumstances change the course of his life. After he learns the identity of the other donor, Booker plans to be a part of his child's life. No matter what.

Will Erika and Booker battle over custody of the baby? Will their horrible loss help them find consolation in each other's arms? Or will fate intervene yet again?

Loss…life…love. What a difference a year makes!
EXCERPT
Erika allowed him to escort her up the stairs and across the porch. He held the screen for her to enter his house. Ceiling fans circulated the crosscurrent breeze coming through the open windows. The room's atmosphere lured her in further. Since he remained at her back, she swiveled to look at him.

""Is that surprise you're trying to hide?""

""Yes. I'll admit it. I'm surprised."" She smiled at him. ""I thought I was coming to your packing facility."" Erika pivoted to look around.

""Down that hallway. You can't miss it.""

""Thanks."" Her steps were brisk but quiet because of her sneakers. ""I won't be long.""

""Take your time.""

She made haste in taking care of her needs. When she emerged, he was nowhere in sight. Nosy, she peeked into each doorway on her trek to the front porch. Through the last one, she spotted a tall cabinet filled with horse and rider trophies. A cowboy. Opening the screen door, Erika said, ""I'm ready.""

Booker, sitting in a rocker, had his leg leisurely draped over the arm. He got up. ""Did you handle your business okay?""

""Do you always come across as having no tact?"" Erika left him on the porch. Turning, she continued, ""Or is that reserved for my benefit?""

""Sorry. I know I can be blunt at times.""

""You can say that again.""

""I know I can be—""

""Oh. Now you've got jokes."" Giving him an admonishing eye, she headed around the house.

""I don't know why""—his long steps had him beside her—""but you strike me as someone who's intuitive, artistic, creative, clever, and all with a sense of humor.""

Erika stopped suddenly. ""You've got to be kidding."" She looked at the black rims with the silver, riveted studs.

""No. I mean every word.""

""No,"" she contested. ""Not that."" Erika looked up at Booker, then at his truck. ""That.""

Laughing, Booker placed a hand on her shoulder. ""See what I mean? A sense of humor on display.""

""I can't climb up there."" Although she adjusted the leg of her jeans, her protruding tummy hindered her knee lift.

""You don't have to."" He uttered those words as he reached and cradled her in his arms.

""Put me down, Booker Templet.""

""Erika."" He looked her dead in her unbelieving eyes. ""It's the only way to get you into the truck. Will you open the door for me, please?""

She did. ""Now, put me down."" Her tush met the leather seat.

EXCERPT
The evening was hot and humid—true South Louisiana weather. Nonetheless, Jordan continued to dance away her troubles. Soon, the denseness of the crowd intensified the temperature. When the tempo of the music slowed, relief rushed over her. This ballad presented the perfect opportunity to sneak off the dance floor. Now she could catch her breath. Jordan strategically mingled at various tables, leaving a few cordial words at each one. With polite gestures, she worked her way from the crowd's core. Beyond the music stage, she spotted a sweet shady spot.
While she imagined herself seated in the space, someone groped her from the rear. Shocked, Jordan jumped. Simultaneously, the person pinned her arms in front of her. Jordan panicked—her body was being held against her will. Movements restricted, her attacker flipped her around with ease. He pressed his face against hers, and then moved his lips backwards until they rested upon her ear.
""Calm down, Senator,"" he said gruffly.
The sound of the male’s voice made her cringe. “Luther. Are. You. Insane?"" In her unflattering position, Jordan tried constantly to escape without garnering attention. However, the fifty-year-old, former boxer was much too strong. He crushed her body against his.
Alcohol oozed from Luther’s pores and irritated her nose. His arms were locked so tight, that she found it difficult to breath. When she finally inhaled, his stale odor filled her lungs.
""What’s this all about, Luther?” She struggled and pushed against him.
""Ah, Jordan. I just want a dance."" Undoubtedly inebriated, his words were jumbled together.
Luther forced her to take a couple of awkward turns. Using brute force, he gyrated his chunky body into hers. Jordan felt battered by his assault. Turning her head, she looked into his blood shot eyes. There, she saw callousness in the depth of his soul.
She resisted. ""I'm only going to say this once,"" she warned. ""Take your hands off me.""
Her demand seemed to incense him, as he tightened his grip. “Get off your high horse, Jordan."" He enunciated each word, drooling as he spoke. ""I've had my eyes on you for a long time. You need a man in your life. You know it too. Just being near me makes you quiver."

Thirteen Sentences from Like Slow Sweet Molasses

Angela was unable to stand one more minute alone in the house with him, afraid she would capitulate and go running into the security Chance’s arms represented. He made her excuses this morning to his family without them being any the wiser regarding their little tiff. Everything muddled along after they took their leave and he did likewise to make the purchases to finish the system.
Now, he worked at her bedroom door like the mad man he was, hurrying to get the job done in order to vacate the premises. Muscles rippled in his upper arms exposed by the white undershirt he stripped down to. Her eyes tagged each flexing motion as he forced in an uncooperative screw that required extra force. He turned to catch her drooling. That’s why she flew from the room and out of the house.
Chance knew her destination as he followed her escape down the street as far as the cameras permitted. Most people dulled the pain with alcohol or drugs. Her anesthesia of choice was the sugar rush of a fruit flavored slush from the neighborhood store. He ambled about the house setting things to right, picking up the paraphernalia littering the work areas, reading the gold dedication plaque on the viola lovingly poised on the music stand in her bedroom, and in the interim glimpsed a familiar vehicle trolling by on the surveillance cameras. His long legs had him on the lower floor—the entry door locking behind him—out on the sidewalk and hauling-ass up the street towards the store while keeping the car in his crosshairs.
