What is MFRW?

MFRW is Marketing for Romance Writers, a peer-oriented mentoring group open to the entire literary community. Ask marketing-related questions, request help, advice, and opinions. You can ask for opportunities to join other authors in promotional efforts. You can learn the business aspects of writing. What's it cost? Nada, zip, zilch, zero -- just come join up and share.
Marketing for Romance Writers promotes for its members on most social media. Get your book cover pinned on one of the MFRW Pinterest boards, and share your tweets on MFRW's monthly Retweet Day. The hashtags #MFRWorg #MFRWauthor and #MFRWhooks help you promote. If you have questions about marketing your books, join us.
The MFRW motto is "seek, teach, share, learn, succeed." MFRW was founded in 2006 by Kayelle Allen, who heads the group to this day, guiding its direction and overseeing the numerous volunteer staff members that help it run. The group began with a dozen friends, and today boasts over 2400 members, and over 7000 members make up our Facebook group. We have a multiple award-winning magazine. We have over 400 followers on Goodreads and feature our members books there in the MFRW Book Place group. On Pinterest, we are followed by over 1500 people, have 55 genre related boards, and almost 1000 pins. Want your book cover pinned on our site? Even if you don't have a Pinterest account, you can take advantage of our presence there. Join our Yahoo group today and you'll get information. Services and membership are free.

An Immortal Forged in Fire #MFRWauthor #Pietas #SciFi @kayelleallen

In this scene from Bringer of Chaos: Forged in Fire, the immortal king, Pietas, is surveying the alien world where he's been exiled. Sempervia is a beautiful planet, but it's not fully terraformed and it harbors dark secrets of its own.

Sempervia, year 1 in exile
The summit lay a good distance ahead, but they had left the forest. Scant grasses and scrubby bushes dotted the landscape. He pushed further up the mountain, where hand over hand, he climbed up among black boulders. Their pockmarked texture stung his palms but did no harm to his feet. He'd hiked half the planet barefoot. Panting from the quick exertion, he turned to take in the view.

Across plains to the east, low-scudding clouds skimmed a fringe of mountains, no more than blue smudges on the horizon. Their white tips implied great height. North, the lazy river he and the human had followed from its source snaked its way across the savannah, a necklace of shimmering gold. The path took seconds to trace with his gaze but had taken them weeks to walk. As it wended its way further south, the confluence of its mighty waters with another river turned its gold to muddy brown.

What worried him were the sheets of gray in the northwest. A storm marched straight toward them. The heavy, pelting rain on Sempervia so saturated the air one could drown on land. They did not dare let it catch them in the open. They needed to cross the summit and reach shelter.

He braced both hands on his knees. How galling to need a break. He'd hiked less than five hours. Was he no better than a mortal?

Before his exile, Pietas would have run--not walked--up this mountain without a single pause. When mortals and traitors among his kind imprisoned him in an unpowered life pod and left him to rot for over a year, it broke his health and shattered his stamina.
Had it not been for his friend, Six, what sanity Pietas possessed would have been as beaten and battered as dirt clods trampled in a horse paddock. Though unable to free Pietas, Six had stayed with him day and night, talking, whistling, singing songs, sharing life and light through his tales.

Long after Pietas could no longer respond.

Broken in body as he was, his will, determination, and drive survived intact, as had his undying thirst for revenge.

No doubt his enemies thought to teach him a lesson. Having endured the worst they could muster, he'd learned there was no pain he could not bear, no matter how horrific. One day, he'd return the favor and teach them.

Forged in Fire...

When the immortal Pietas is marooned on a barren world with no food and few survival tools, he knows it could be worse. He could be alone. But that's the problem. He's not.
Half a million of his people sleep in cryostasis, trapped inside their pods and it's up to Pietas to save them. He can't release one at a time. It's all or nothing. He's facing over five hundred thousand hungry, thirsty, homeless, immortals all looking to him for answers.
It's not all bad. The beautiful telepathic warrior he's loved for lifetimes is at his side. He's bonded with a sentient panther. He hates humans but the one dumped on this planet with him has become a trusted friend.
But before Pietas can build shelter, figure out how to grow food, or set up a government, he must take back command from a ruthless enemy he's fought for centuries. His brutal, merciless father.
Immortals may heal, but a wound of the heart lasts forever...

Bringer of Chaos: Forged in Fire has no profanity or explicit content, but lots of angst, a little humor, some sweet romance, and a ton of betrayal with plenty of vengeance. Oh, and let's not forget--one ginormous black "kitty".

Dara was gaining strength daily, and would finish therapy the first week of January and return to work. Disability paid for the basics - lights, phone, water, trash collection, and she'd never bought anything on credit, refusing to dig herself into a hole she'd never escape once it got started.
She went to the closet and pulled down a box with a ball, crayons, paper, and three books. A friend had brought over a few things as well. This wasn't the grand Christmas Dara had wanted for her daughter, but all the other valuables had been sold. There was nothing left but her wedding ring.
She didn't wear it. Removing it had been part of saying good-bye to Jack.

They said it would help, and it had. Sort of. But not much.

Dara sank into one of the kitchen chairs and put her face in her hands.

Sometime later, when the doorbell rang, she grabbed a paper towel and dried her eyes. The clock over the stove said nine o'clock. Who would be calling at this hour on Christmas Eve? She stuffed the wet towel in her robe pocket on the way to the door.

Life as a Writer
photo romcmas200_zpsaa2ba60f.jpgI love telling the stories inside me and think I would burst if I had to keep them all inside. There are so many to tell! When a reader responds with laughter, tears, enjoyment -- it gives me such a great jolt of energy that I immediately want to run out and write more. I love creating an honest portrayal of characters, escape, adventure, fun, excitement, passion and something new. In fact, I wrote a mission statement for myself as a writer that embodies this. My mission is to give readers a great roller coaster ride of a story that brings excitement, fun, and takes them in directions they didn't expect.

How Karen Cote' Got Roped -- er, I mean Sweet-talked into MFRW @karensromance #MFRWlove @MFRW_ORG

Karen Cote'
Karen Coté is -- or was, before today -- the Promotions Director at Marketing for Romance Writers (MFRW). This is the story of how she got this position.

As the founder of MFRW, it was up to me to do most of the heavy lifting. I had a few volunteers who helped with approving posts when needed, but it was not as organized back then as it is now. Then Karen Coté joined the group. She immediately caught the value of what we were doing. Marketing for Romance Writers is a peer-based community of people in the literary community. We post questions and get answers, ask for advice, seek promotional opportunities, and offer them. There's a strict no-promotion policy. We aren't hit over the head with info about new books or sharing our blogs. It's business-related only.

One day, shortly after Karen joined, she emailed me a link to a site where we might get exposure as a group. I took advantage of it and thanked her for thinking of it. A few days later, she sent me another one. I'd never heard of the site before, so I investigated. It was helpful, and I told her so. Not long after that, she sent me another one, and asked if it was okay if she wrote an article about the group and posted it on another site. I was floored. I was writing full time, volunteering with MFRW, and mentoring a few new authors on the side, so I didn't have time to do much extra. I was thrilled to have Karen's help.

That's when the idea hit me.

Why not ask Karen Coté to do this all the time? So I wrote to her, explained my idea, and asked what she thought. Would she be officially in charge of finding ways to tell people about the group? We would call the position "Promotions Director." To my great delight, she said yes.

Having someone to help took a load off my shoulders. I was able to focus on other areas, and concentrate more on the leadership opportunities. I organized the volunteers a little better, and created a separate Yahoo group where we could discuss aspects of leadership and details about the promotions. We asked for more volunteers, who became Member Liaisons. We coordinated setting up a blog and organizing it for promoting our members. There have been 199 posts so far, and it has nearly 200 followers and many ways to link and share. Due to Karen's influence, we added a Pinterest account for MFRW, and used it to share our members' books. It now has 72 boards, 763 pins, and 634 followers. No idea how many repins it has, but readers love being able to add our pins to their boards, and every pinned book cover leads to a place to buy the book. The responsibility for Pinterest is now handled by Paloma Beck, who does a wonderful job of sharing the posts via our Twitter account. Guess who set up the Twitter account? You guessed it: Karen Coté. MFRW_ORG has 297 followers and has sent out 444 tweets. We're currently looking for a Twitter maven who will help us fire up this account and use it to help promote the group and its members.

We also have bloghops, an amazing newsletter in multiple formats, a website, and a forum on Coffee Time Romance. For two years, we've held a "Marketing Summer Camp" -- one full weekend of workshops on how to market your books, how to write, how to query, what to do with social media, and various other topics related to being an author, publisher, or other worker in the literary world.

Guess what? All of what MFRW does is free.

Erotic Deception
by Karen Cote'
That was one of the things that drew Karen to what we did. She saw the value of what we wanted to do, and that I had a personal commitment to offer these things at no cost. She told me many times that she valued the heart I had to give. Perhaps that was why we became such good friends. She has that same giving spirit. Karen has funded prizes and giveaways at camp out of her own pocket. She's been the backbone of our group with her fun tweets, sharing spirit, and her ability to infuse every aspect of our efforts with humor. Her writing motto is "Romance... it's complicated." How true in any life! But somehow she manages to express it in such a way that she's been a best-seller from the beginning of her career.

Because of One Person.

All the success of Marketing for Romance Writers happened because one person caught the vision of what I was trying to do, and came alongside to lend a hand. When I say Karen Coté will be missed, you can believe it's true.

Here's where to find Karen on the net.

13 Tips for Characterization and Conflict

In writing, as in life, it's often the similarities of things that bring about the most conflict. Familiarity breeds contempt. Here are some ideas to use those similarities as well as differences to enhance characterization and conflict.

1. Is there a particular type of feud that underlies part of your character's background? For example, is her brother in the Army, and her hero's brother is in the Navy, and she meets her hero at halftime during the Army-Navy game? Imagine they are both wearing sweatshirts with Army or Navy on them, and end up stepping forward at the same time in the concession stand. Turns out they have the same order (beer and hot dogs), and even both want only mustard on their dogs. How might the similarities as well as the differences fuel the conflicts, yet bring them closer together?
2. Write a backstory for each major character, so he has a reason for being the way he/she is. Did your hero become an outlaw because he broke the law while saving someone's life, but he hides this? Why? Does he have a dark secret about his past? Who else knows about it? Could this come out at a worse time than now? What will he do to prevent it?
3. Create a barrier between your main characters that keeps them from communicating at a critical moment. Suppose one is telepathic, and the other can't shield thoughts. If something suddenly hampered that flow of thought, what would happen to their usual smooth dynamic? Would the one with telepathy think the other was hiding something? Would this cause a misunderstanding that might fuel conflict?
4. Give your hero/ine an idiosyncrasy. For example, does your heroine tap her chin when she's deep in thought? Perhaps this is how the hero realizes she's hiding something later in the story, and clues him in to make a critical decision. Make the odd habit enough of a part of the character for readers to recognize it too.
5. Create a list of things that your main character wants. Write down three conflicts for each one, and then figure out an unexpected solution. For example: WANT #1: to be a mom more than anything in the world. CONFLICT #1: She can't conceive because _____. CONFLICT #2: Because _____ happened in her past she doesn't trust men. CONFLICT #3: Because she works as a ________ she travels all over the world, so how can she even think about adopting? She's pretty much given up her dream, but it's still there, taunting her. UNEXPECTED SOLUTION: Her work puts her in a war torn area where an orphaned street kid's savvy enables him to save her life. How might saving this child lead to the loss of other things in her life? Career opportunities? Travel? Freedom of movement? How can she reconcile her desires against the child's very real needs, and the fact that she owes him her life? Now, throw in a hero who risks his life to help them both. How might this change her conflicts?
6. What event from your hero and/or heroine's lives changed them the most? How did it come about? What would they do if they could change it? How can you adapt that concept to the current story?
7. Don't be too kind. Let your favorite character suffer. Conflict is the lifeblood of a story. Readers want to see a happy ending that is well earned, so don't go easy on your character. Help them overcome it.
8. Don't be afraid to make your villain truly evil. No one fears a wimp. It's okay to be bad (at least in this case).
9. Consider what your main characters don't want. Is there something they would never do even under penalty of death? What is it, and why?
10. A character was forced into a compromising situation in which a lie seemed the best way out. Over the years, that lie became second nature, and almost seems like the truth. Now, the lie has been exposed. What will happen if the truth comes out? How does your character react? Will he/she try to cover it up? To what extent is he/she willing to go? What emotions go through the character's heart?
11. Create doubt for your character. Yes, we know that the good guy will win, and the bad guy will be defeated, at least for now. But at what point does your hero/ine look at a situation and think "How can I keep doing this? How can I go on?" No action movie is complete without a final showdown in which the hero/ine is so beat up and so close to defeat that you start to hold your breath and wonder "will he make it?"
Surrender Love
2010 EPIC Award Winner
Erotic SciFi Romance
12. Foreshadow conflict for your characters. In the book Surrender Love, the two heroes are generations apart. When a cousin points out the large age difference, the younger hero says, "The age of someone isn't something I think about." Later, it's discovered the younger hero isn't as old as he lets others think he is, and the older one isn't just older -- he's immortal. Each has a reason to hide his age, and part of that reason is a character flaw as well as a strength.
13. Make a list of ways your characters handle conflict, and stick to them -- until there's a reason to change. Does your heroine head for the bar, or chocolate? Does your hero stalk off in a huff, or go practice yoga? Does they both go to the shooting range and blow stuff up? At what point does your character talk to a friend and hash out the details? Is he too much of a loner to talk about emotional things? How might he handle conflict if there is no one to talk to but he is a talker? Does he pace? Does she keep a journal? What if that journal is found by the villain, who uses it against the hero? At what point does your character's usual handling of conflict backfire or fail to work? That can be the crux of a conflict all on its own.

Conflict and characterization go hand-in-hand. How your characters react to conflict is what makes them who they are. Write them with depth by knowing how they deal with life. Ask them questions, be willing to listen, and then use those reactions to beef up the story.
