Writing Dark Stories

Writing Dark Stories
By
Toni Noel

I pitched To Feel Again to Leslie Wainger at a writer's conference, my first pitch for my first completed manuscript. The editor listened to about half my spiel and then commented, "This isn't a romance!" True. In the Harlequin/Silhouette sense, it is not a romance, but it is a love story about a man who helps a reclusive abused woman regain her confidence, a story I felt needed to be told that has a happy ending when the couple falls in love.

My editor at Desert Breeze Publishing agreed the story needed to be told and released To Feel Again on November 11th. The subject matter may be dark but the message is clear -- escape from an abusive relationship is possible. There is hope. Reach out for help.

Decisive Moments is my novel about a photographer and a reclusive architect. During their childhood the hero's brother had been abused by his father. A repeat of the abuse forces his mother to kill his father. Then she turns the gun on herself. Yes, this is a dark romance, but the hero finds a loving woman who brings the sunshine back into his life, so it, too, is a story of hope.

In Restored Dreams, Treasure was date-raped in college and begs the hero Buck to help her overcome her aversion to sex by making love to her. He refuses, and instead makes her fall in love with him.

I write about another kind of darkness in Fairy Dusted, my novel about a childless couple's efforts to conceive. While Jill suffers from empty-arms-syndrome, her husband Drew prays they never have a child. He secretly fears fatherhood until the near drowning of his nephew changes his life. Yes, this is a love story about imperfect people living unfilled lives deprived of goodness and light.

Authors can write dark stories without writing about serial killers and rape. The secret is in not going too dark, and in allowing your characters to come back into the light for the resolution.

In Homeward Bound, scheduled for release in 2013, the hero becomes the unwilling CEO of the family conglomerate when his father suddenly dies. A CEO is the one thing he vowed he'd never become when choosing his career path, but he can see no way out. His family is depending on him. The only change he's free to make in his life, he reasons, is in his living arrangements. Convinced a bachelor has no need for such a big house, he decides to sell and hires Krista, a novice interior decorator who grew up in foster homes, to stage his house for quick sale. Luke escapes the bonds of home ownership, but the sale of the home she poured so much of herself into shatters Krista's happiness.

As a writer, you can make the conflict as dark and unbearable as you like. Just be sure you create a character strong enough to withstand the pain.

Blurb: Reclusive Jenny Hamilton wants only to be left alone. Afraid to venture far from her modern cabin in the Eastern Sierras, this widow and writer endures a solitary existence caring for her animals until Tom Driscoll washes up in the creek. She rescues the unconscious man, and when his injuries heal, he helps Jenny overcome her fear of men, the result of an abusive marriage.

Tom saves her from the burly intruder intent on rape who traumatizes Jenny. Her earlier fears come flooding back, convincing her there is no man she should trust. She sends Tom away with the sheriff who comes to pick up their prisoner.

When Jenny realizes Tom has taught her to feel again, she reaches out to him. He rushes back to her side, and she promises never to send him away again.

Excerpt:  "What are you making?"
The words caught in Tom's dry, throat and growled across the distance with such harshness those dainty fingers he'd enjoyed watching so much froze in midair. The attractive young woman pivoted her golden head and peered in his direction, her doe-like eyes widening. Wetting her lips, she blinked at him, making him regret he'd interrupted her weaving.
"You're awake." Her whispered words fell from trembling lips.
Dummy. You scared her with your sudden outburst. A smile might ease her fright.
He tried to lift the corners of his mouth, but his dry, cracked lips stretched across his teeth. He winced, flicking out his tongue to circle his mouth, raking his parched lips with needed moisture.
He cleared his throat and tried again. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to startle you."
Her hands settled in her lap. She clasped her fingers. Puzzled, he watched her knuckles turn white. She moistened her lips again, then chewed on the bottom one, her somber gaze never leaving his face. Those expressive eyes held a disturbing wariness he couldn't comprehend.
"You hurt your head," she whispered.
He tried to touch the spot that ached. Both his hands came up, connected by rope.
"What in blazes?"
The fairy rose, her golden head moving from his line of vision. He lifted his head to follow her movements. Rockets exploded behind his eyes.
            He shut them again.
Her footsteps faltered, then moved toward him. He opened his eyes.
A pair of trim leather boots stopped beside him. The knees above the boots bent as she knelt in his line of vision and leaned back on her heels, considering him with a wary look.
"Your fever made you delirious, so I tied your hands."
Her words brought a bright flush to her cheeks. With the sun no longer shining on her head, her hair took on a darker shade, encircling her shoulders in a cape of chestnut satin.
            "Did I hurt you?"
She nodded. "Last night. A little. Here, I'll untie you."

Bio: Toni Noel's love of books started in childhood, when her mother first read The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew to her. She helped start church libraries in two rural Tennessee towns and appeared before the City Planning Commission and the San Diego City Council to urge a site be purchased. As the neighborhood spokesman for the new library the City Councilman for her district invited her to turn the second shovel of dirt at the groundbreaking for the new library. Toni's fondest dream, to see one of her safe-haven-for-the-heart novels available for checkout there may soon be fulfilled. Desert Breeze Publishing will release in print form in November the author's first published novel Law Breakers and Love Makers.

Author Spotlight with Kristina Knight

Esmerelda Quinn has been looking for a place to belong since her parents were killed in a car crash when she was young. The closest thing to home has always been Aunt Constance's villa in Puerto Vallarta, so after a string of hotellier jobs, she's coming home to run the villa.

Santiago Cruz has called the villa home for as long as he can remember. In between surfing events, Constance has always had a room for him. Color him surprised when Constance leaves him with a joint interest in the villa – along with her niece Esmerelda.

Esme isn't thrilled to share ownership of the villa with the the youngest Cruz brother - especially as the Cruz family has been after the villa for years. But Santiago has grown up while she's been away and soon she finds herself falling for the rich boy down the hall – all over again.

Excerpt:
Esmerelda whirled on Santiago.  "I realize your type never looks a gift-horse in the mouth, but sharing a villa with you for the next six months isn't my idea of a good time.  It isn't even my idea of what the nice side of Hades looks like, so stop speaking for me."  Esme returned her gaze to the lawyer.  "I'd like to see my letter.  Now."  She held out her hand, barely keeping it from trembling in anger but Velazquez only shook his head.
"Dios, you were never this uptight before you left Mexico for your fancy boarding schools and university.  We will read our letters as Constance requested, after three months," he told the lawyer, standing from the sofa as if that was the end of it.
Then he firmly grasped Esme's elbow, pulled her to her feet and frog-marched her out of the stuffy office before she could protest.
The air on the street was blessedly cool, a brisk breeze blowing in from the ocean, but that did nothing to cool Esme's temper.
"How dare you?  You do not speak for me, Santiago, you didn't when we were kids, you didn't in Napa and you won't now."  She jerked her arm from his grasp and turned back to the office but he stopped her by positioning his body in front of the door.
"You still do not listen, pequena.  Constance has asked you to give her three months to recuperate, do you not see that?  She has given you three months to prove yourself."  He stepped forward, crowding her against the adobe wall, his voice softening.  "You have not been here as I have."  The words lashed at her heart but Esme refused to let Santiago see that he had the power to hurt her.
"No, I haven't been here, watching her condition deteriorate without doing anything as you have," she said acidly.  "I only had phone calls, where it is an easy thing to sound healthy even as illness is beating you down.  How would you react if your father pulled a vanishing act, leaving me to run your hotels around the world while you sat on your thumbs in the corner?"
Santiago shrugged.  "I expect Tobias would have more issue with Father's decisions than I.  I would welcome the additional time to enjoy the finer things in life."
She scoffed.  "Like you did in Napa?"
"I did enjoy you, pequena."

An Interview With Lizzie T. Leaf

Today we have the wonderful Lizzie T. Leaf with us. Let’s give her a warm MFRWA welcome!

Tell us about your latest book, including its genre. Does it cross over to other genres? If so, what are they?

The DEAD series is in re-release through Musa Publishing and a new book in the series is scheduled to release in October, 2012.  The series is paranormal romance with humor and spice.

What can we expect from you in the future?

The seconded book in the Magical Love series at Passion in Print Press is in for edits, but don’t have a release date yet.  Also, possibly another DEAD in addition to the October release by the end of the year.

How do we find out about you and your books?

My website www.lizzietleaf.com will have all the books that are available, coming soon books and scheduled appearances.

How many readers/fans contact you?

lizzietleaf@comcast.net

Do your fans' comments and letters influence you in any way?

Fans turned the first DEAD book into a series.  I’d only planned to write the one, but kept getting asked “When is the next one going to be out?”

How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?

I’ve been told by some who know me well that my writing if me.  They think I’m a combination of snarky, fun and angst. If that’s a case, then I guess a bit of ‘me’ is in my writing.  And yes, I do draw on life experience, or at least the emotions, at times.  The saying of, be careful or you’ll end up in my book can come, into play especially with some of those from my past.

What do you do to relax and recharge your batteries?

I love to travel.  It’s fun to experience new cultures and meet new people.  When I really need downtime a cruise gives me some of both worlds.  Time spent relaxing in the cabin or by the pool when I’m in a quiet mood, or joining in the social activities when the mood strikes.  Plus, the ports of call gives the connection to the new cultures and people.

Do you feel humor is important in fiction and why?

If I don’t feel humor is important then I’m in trouble since most of my books contain humor.  I enjoy reading it too.  After a stressful day nothing is better than to laugh.  Laughter is a way to bring ‘me’ out of the dumps, either with a book that brings a smile, a TV show or a movie.  It’s amazing how much better a good belly laugh can make one feel!!!

Would you like to write a different genre than you do now, or sub-genre?

Yes, totally different.  In fact, I’m working on a Young Adult (love the angst) and a Women’s Fiction.  Both are on hold at the moment because of the two series I’m working on, but when I need a change of pace writing a little on one of them is the way I go.

Where can your readers find you?

Where’s your favorite place to hang out online?

I’m on Facebook & Twitter most week days and my blog a few times a week.

Bio: Award winning author, Lizzie T. Leaf started life in Kansas, continued her growing in North Carolina, and currently shivers through the winters in Colorado.  She has numerous e-books in varying lengths and her first print book, Struck by Lightning, won dual 2007 Beacon awards, in addition to being a finalist in two other contests.

In addition, Making Christmas, a Christmas Historical novella set during the Civil War won Love Romances Café Best Historical for 2011 and is a finalist in the Aspen Gold for Best Novella.

Beyond Magic, the first book in the Magical Love series won the 2012 Award of Excellence Best Paranormal/Fantasy/Sy-Fi, as well as a finalist for Best Paranormal in the Aspen Gold.  Winners are announced in mid to late October.
Since discovering the fun of writing paranormal, she plays with creating vampires, faeries and other immortals. Her current focus is the DEAD series.  Musa Publishing has re-released the first four novellas in the series and DEAD Hot, a new novella, is scheduled to release in October.  Emerging Magic, the second novel in the Magical Love series will also release in late October or early November with Passion in Print Press.

When not creating mischief for paranormal beings, she can be found exploring the other genres she wants to write.  She also serves as the 2012 President for the Heart of Denver Romance Writers.

Lizzie loves to read, spend time with her family and travel with her best friend husband during her free time, on which most of friends ask…“what free time?”
