MFRW author Mahlee Ashwynne hosts Thursday13 today with her latest release. About the author: "Writing
has been an integral part of my life. I have many plots in the pipeline
... so many and only one life! But I hope to get as many as I can out
there either self published or through publishers. I fell in love
with the medieval era. So much fiction that can be interwoven between
facts and real people of history! The futuristic aspect of what might be
in science fiction drew me like a magnet. I pre empted the popularity
of supernatural fiction too with my love for that genre. What I write
now reflects my interests."

Blurb An assassin needs anonymity, loose ends tied up. Svanger slayers have no room for sentiment. Until one woman cracks his icy veneer.
Ace reporter Chaz Halyssion is witness to the assassination of the King of Malthusen. She has it recorded. As one of the few off-worlders there she is under immediate suspicion and on the run. Problem is the real assassin knows she can identify him but he needs her to help him get off-world.
Aldien is the last of the legendary Chameleords. The best at his job in the galaxy. He never leaves anything to chance. Chaz is his last option for escape. She dies once her usefulness is over.
In his darkness Chaz sows a thread of light and hope Aldien needs to extinguish. With regret. In the end he has to choose. He has two options. Kill her, or mind-wipe her and walk away from her forever.
1 Her family, for all its status and importance,
wouldn’t stand by her or disrupt their lives for her well-being.
2 Somehow she needed to glide through the night,
unrecognised, and make it to board the starflight home
3 As a Svanger slayer he must preserve invisibility,
nothing to connect him to a completed mission.
4 Before she hit the floor the same arms that held her
captive caught her and lifted her against a leather-clad chest.
5 “My murder. Or is rape your motivation? That’s what
you want,” she spat out in a bitter whisper.
6 “It’s a long ride to the starport. You won’t be able
to evade capture and detention alone. Not many survive questioning,
particularly where it concerns the death of their king.”
7 “Yeah, right. Obviously you have something bigger than
your ego they desire. Your natural charm leaves much to the imagination.” The
fiend was enjoying this.
8 “Listen closely. I’m telling you only once. This day
has been hell. I got squashed in crowds, singed by stray laser fire, turned
into a fugitive, ran until my lungs gave up, found myself a seedy room,
attacked by you, then my senses assaulted and aroused.” She flexed her nails
into his skin to emphasise her demand. “ I want. You give. Got it?”
9 By taking his body unconditionally she seduced his
mind.
10 “Strange woman. Naked you didn’t have any
pretensions. Dressed, you have reservations about getting up close. I don’t
think either of us is in a condition to indulge in wild uninhibited sex in this
tight space. And you are the one in danger of succumbing to an illness.”
11 “Chameleord. It gave my race the means to disguise
themselves in other appearances, including a change of eye colour. Mine are
predominantly blue-based. However, I can achieve amber, brown, emerald greens
and any other variation I can see.”
12 There was no room for sentimentality or any other
emotion. She had to die.
13 Damned if he killed her, damned if he let her live.
Either way there was a wound within him that would never heal."

Buy link:Amazon Barb shares 13 sentences from the novel: He went to forage for some deadwood. As he bent down to gather the not-too-green wood, he scowled at his smooth skin, courtesy of a complete epidermal regeneration due to the severe burns he'd suffered at Hunin over most of his body. He grabbed the wood, taking it back to camp without the effort it would've taken him three weeks ago—three weeks in his own, subjective time, once he was out of the damned medically induced coma and could mark the passage of time again.
Not that he had any reason to mark time anymore, but . . . small favors.
As he continued to gather wood and mindlessly bring it back to camp, he bent, stretched and placed. Granted, it was nice not to hurt. But he'd liked his scars, no matter how strange the damned doctors found it. He was sixty-nine, not eighteen, and it was right that his body showed some wear. And he was tired of everyone—his friends, his family, his doctors—telling him to make the best of a very bad bargain.
Or worse, that he should be happy, when so many had died at Hunin.
MEET Aidee Ladnier.
Aidee Ladnier began writing fiction at twelve years old but took a hiatus to be a magician’s assistant, ride in hot air balloons, produce independent movies, collect interesting shoes, and amass a secret file with the CIA. A lover of genre fiction, it has been a lifelong dream of Aidee's to write both romance and erotica with a little science-fiction, fantasy, mystery, or the paranormal thrown in to add a zing.
We Asked. Aidee Answered.
Why did you decide to write romance novels?
Because I love to read romance. There's so much hope and promise in characters falling in love, being in love, and living happily ever after.
How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?
I think all authors put something of themselves in their work. Although I write science fiction, my characters are still very recognizable as humans with foibles and flaws.
When did you first think about writing?
I started writing at twelve. Predictably, it was science fiction with a kidnapped space princess, a dashing hero, and lots of space ships.
What prompted you to submit your first ms?
I was listening to Kevin Allison's excellent podcast RISK. At the end of every show he says, ""Today's the day. Take a risk."" And I knew my risky thing to do would be to send in the story sitting on my hard drive.
What genre(s) do you write?
I write science fiction and mystery romance. My characters are often LGBT as well.
Would you like to write a different genre than you do now, or sub-genre?
I'd really like to try writing a YA novel. There is a dearth of LGBT YA novels and a desperate need for them.
Tell us about your latest book. What motivated the story? Where did the idea come from?
My novel The Klockwerk Kraken actually had a title before it had a story. My friend Gina Storm Grant came up with the title when I told her I'd like to write a novel about a character with tentacles. Yes, I know that's kind of weird, but I'd just attended a panel about taboos at RainbowCon 2014. They encouraged everyone to write outside their comfort zone and so I was determined to meet the challenge. As a result, my character Teo Houdin, the tentacled bartender was born--and he owned a bar, The Klockwerk Kraken.
BLURB
As the supply shipments stop coming, Teo Houdin needs all his tentacles to keep his waystation bar open. Facing a riot by thirsty miners stranded in the backwater of the galaxy, Teo helps a greenie space pilot buy a ship in return for a regular haul of liquor. But he longs for the courage to invite the enigmatic spacer to fill his lonely bed as well.
Still smarting from his newly implanted navigational ports, Jimenez knows owning his own ship will prevent him from ever being bought and sold again. For a former slave, transporting cargo through the emptiness of space sounds like paradise, but after meeting the compassionate and sexy Teo, his heart feels empty, too.
At the edge of the galaxy's spiral arm, can Teo convince Jimenez that the heart has its own tentacles and theirs should be entwined forever?"When the right space pilot walks into his bar, a desperate bartender uses all his wiles (and tentacles) to talk the man into business and his bed--but the spacer is still enslaved by his past and isn't sure he can deal with a two-armed lover, much less one with six.
Jimenez slid into an empty spot at the pale stone bar and caught sight of the clearest, happiest eyes he’d ever seen, a shade lighter than the man’s tousled brown mop above. A dimple quirked at the side of his full lips, mesmerizing Jimenez. The loud voices behind him slid away and for a moment, it was quiet in his mind. Jimenez flinched when his shoulder was jostled and the spell broke. “Hey, you okay, buddy? First time? What can I pour for you?” Jimenez blinked, realizing the tall bartender was speaking to him. The man’s smiling eyes crinkled at the corners of his bronzed face. Jimenez swallowed, and he ducked his chin, trying not to stare again, trying to hide his hot cheeks. He’d never been so close to such a handsome man. “Did you want a drink?” The bartender quirked an eyebrow. “Yeah… I mean yes. Whiskey neat.” His voice came out gruffer than he expected. “Bourbon, Scotch, Rye…?” “Surprise me.” It was a game Jimenez played. He’d order whiskey and discover what the bartender served. If he reached for the rail bottle closest to hand, it meant he would pour either the cheapest or the local favorite. If he pulled something from the top shelf, the bartender angled for a bigger tip. But if he grabbed a decanter off to the side or behind another bottle, he’d score the bartender’s personal pick. “Coming right up.” The bartender raised a tentacle in greeting, calling out to another patron. Oh, God. The man was a Pod. Of course he was. In a joint named the Klockwerk Kraken, who better to tend the bar than a tentacled man?
Meet Vicky Burkholder.
Vicky Burkholder lives in a three-generation home with spouse, kids, grandkids and cats. Fortunately, two of the other adults are writers so she is surrounded by creativity in the midst of chaos. She has worked for magazines, newspapers, government organizations, e-publishers, and private clients. At various times in her life, she has been a teacher, a secretary, a short-order cook, a computer specialist, a DJ, and a librarian.
Who, if anyone, has influenced your writing? My dad was the first one to influence me. He taught me my love of the written word and that books can lead to whole new worlds.
How long does it take you to write a book? It really depends on the book - how long it's going to be, how much research is involved, and all that boring stuff. But generally, if I have all the backwork done, just a couple of months.
How do you come up with your ideas? From everywhere. From something on TV, a snippet in the news, something I see on the street... ideas are everywhere. You just have to be aware of them and run with them.
Tell us about your latest book.
The Turn of the Card was a ""what if"" sort of idea. What if... you got bet in a game of cards, and lost? What if... the man who bet you was your father? What if... he sold you off to pay off his debts? What if... and so on. And outer space? Whole new worlds to explore. It's a little science fiction, a little adventure, a little mystery, and a lot of romance.
Jessica Windemere loses her freedom when her father bets her in a poker game. But she isn’t willing to accept her fate without a fight. To have her revenge, she first must survive an unknown world while contracted as some stranger’s wife. She wants nothing more to do with men until a huge, dark god rides into her camp. Can she risk losing her new love on the turn of a card?
Kiernan Randall is on his way home from a trading mission. The group of abandoned women he finds were definitely not expected, especially their feisty red-haired leader. She is contracted to his enemy, but gives herself to him and firmly entwines his heart. Can he trust her enough to let her wager their future together on her skill with cards?
“Did you see how big they were?” “I saw the big bulge in the leader’s pants.” “I’d love to get some of that.” “Me too.” Jess strode into the sleeping area and shut the door. Her body temperature rose from warm to hot as she remembered the way his eyes had traveled over her. Her nipples tingled and tightened into hard nubs. Lower down, the heat built in intensity and she fought to control her libido. “He’s a man. Nothing more.” But oh, what a man. She went into the bathing room and ran water over her head, attempting to cool her overheated body. “Jess?” Cammy called. “The food is ready and the men are here.” “Fine. I’ll be right out.” Jess leaned against the sink and stared at her reflection in the grainy mirror. “Just a man. Nothing more.” She stopped at her bunk and pulled her PDA out of her bag so he could see the contract. If these men weren’t their mates, then who were they? She felt for the knife in her pocket. No matter who they were, she wouldn’t take any chances. She went out to find the men sitting at the long table in the center of the room. The women stood around them, glaring at each other. “What’s wrong now?” Jess asked. Cammy came to her. “They can’t decide who gets to sit with the men and who has to sit at the other tables.” Jess snorted. “Oh for star’s sake.” She went back to her room and retrieved the deck of cards. Maybe her father had been good for something after all. He’d taught her how to handle cards well over the years. She returned to the group, shuffling the deck as she went. “Everybody draws a card. High cards sit at the main table. Low cards sit elsewhere. In the case of a draw, hearts are high, followed by spades, diamonds, clubs.” She spread the deck face down on the table. “Don’t show your card until all have drawn. Cam, you start.” “You will not draw,” the leader of the men said to Jess. “You sit by me, or we leave.”
What can we expect from you in the future? More futuristics - this one is just the first of a series (but they're all stand alone books so no cliffhanger endings!) and more paranormals and shapeshifters. Why stick with the plain when you can create new life and new civilizations? :)
Do you have a favorite author? Too many to list, but some of my favorites include Anne McCaffrey, Neil Gaiman, Misty Simon, Laura Bradford... and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

A hot and heady must-read! *March 30, 2013*

This review is from: The Brain Exchange (Kindle Edition)
I think The Brain Exchange is a great idea. I mean, aren't we all curious as to how the other half lives? When I got this book, the only thing I knew for sure was there would be a lot of sex. But in between all the various positions, partners & places, including outer space, the story is so satisfying as well. The author takes you on a wild rollercoaster ride after the two main characters, Amana & Steel, exchange brains. The back-and-forth action between them was on the fast track, and the many plot twists were hair-raising. I really liked the scenes at Club SXXX, would love to go there one day--today even?! Shouldn't give too much away, but this book seemed like a movie to me & if one ever gets made, let's hope it will be as good as the book.

Jessica's latest release is The Star Princess, an Erotic New Adult, Sci-Fi/Futuristic Romance, with Decadent Publishing.
In one week, Princess Ro’sa will board a spaceship, leaving her home on Minjet to be with her betrothed on Earth. The only problem is, she detests the prince’s selfish and arrogant ways, preferring to spend time with his personal aide, a man who stirs her desires in ways she never imagined possible with his radiant blue eyes and smouldering lips. And oh, the way he touches her. Earth’s post-apocalyptic landscape offers little, but the alliance offers much, and a princess must do her duty, no matter the danger to her person and to her heart. Will Princess Ro'sa honor her duty or follow her heart?
At the whoosh of the space shuttle flying overhead, the feline on Ro’sa’s knee hissed before jumping to the floor. Ro’sa hurried to the front of the house, pressing her palms and nose against the window. Somewhere in that ship was her betrothed, the prince from Earth she would marry. Ka’lyn, her best friend, squeezed in beside her, claiming the rest of the available window space. “What do you think he looks like? I’ve never seen anyone from Earth before. Maybe he has two heads, or one eye....” She nudged Ro’sa’s side. “Two cocks?” “Ka, really?” Flaring heat rushed to Ro’sa’s cheeks and temporarily paused the fluttering of firetubes in her stomach. In seven rotations, she would say good-bye to her home, her family, and all of her friends to be with a complete stranger. She’d grown up knowing this time would come, but it had always seemed so far away. Until he’d arrived. Ro’sa swallowed her nerves. “His people just recently joined the Confederacy. I think the only reason they were invited was to prevent an intergalactic war when they learned of the existence of life beyond their own solar system.” They’d already destroyed most of their planet. Who knows what they would have done had the Confederacy not intervened? Ka’lyn grabbed her shoulders and turned Ro’sa to face her. “I know all this, but what do they look like?” “Humanoid, like us.” She searched her memory for the few Terran dignitaries she’d met. “But their skin is different shades of brown, from nearly white to almost black.” Though she had no idea where her betrothed fit into the spectrum, never having been allowed to travel to Earth. How she wished she had. If her parents had allowed them to meet earlier, she’d have far fewer worries and much more experience with how to interact with those from Earth, and with her betrothed. She’d retained her virginity for him, the only female her age on the planet who hadn’t experienced sex, though she hoped to know what it was like before she left for Earth. “Weird. So, when do you get to meet him?” “Tonight.” Ro’sa returned her gaze out the window, watching the shuttle descend onto the runway. Had the prince saved himself for her? “There’s an official introduction ceremony where we will shake hands and eat our first meal together.” “That’s crap.” Her friend tugged on her fingers. “Let’s go meet him as he’s coming off the ship.” Ro’sa shook her head, yanking her hand away. “I can’t. I have to follow protocol.” “Then we’ll hide in the shrubs. Don’t you want to check him out before you’re introduced to him in front of everyone?” Biting her bottom lip, Ro’sa watched the spacecraft disappear below the treetops. “I guess.” Then she wouldn’t look like a fool in her first reaction to him. She could hold her emotions in check, having already caught sight of the prince. “Let’s go then.” Ka’lyn stood at the door before she had the chance to move. They left her friend’s home behind. Darting through the woods on the packed dirt path, Ro’sa hoped they’d make it to the runway in time. If the castle guards hastened him away, they’d never make it in time.
