BOOK SPOTLIGHT: Walls for the Wind @ActuallyAlethea #MFRWauthor

MFRW Author Alethea Williams released Walls for the Wind, a Western Historical Romance

with Whiskey Creek Press LLC on April 1, 2014.

Can an angel survive Hell on Wheels? When Kit Calhoun leaves New York City with a train car full of foundlings from the Immigrant Children’s Home, she has no clue she might end up as adoptive mother to four of them in rip-roaring Cheyenne, Wyoming. Kit has spent her life in the Children’s Home and now she rides the Orphan Trains, distributing homeless children to the young nation’s farmers as fast as the rails are laid.

The first time handsome Patrick Kelley spies Kit in Julesburg, Colorado Territory, he wants her. But circumstances, and a spectral-looking demented gambler as well as Kit’s certainty no one in his right mind would want her cobbled-together family, conspire to keep them apart. As Patrick and Kit and her brood ride Hell on Wheels into their destiny, they’re all forced to leave behind everything they knew and forge new lives in the raw American West.

About Alethea
Western history has been the great interest of my adult life. I've lived in Wyoming, Colorado, and Oregon. Although an amateur historian, I am happiest researching different times and places in the historical West. And while staying true to history, I try not to let the facts overwhelm my stories. Story always comes first in my novels, and plot arises from the relationships between my characters. I'm always open to reader response to my writing.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT: A Demon In Love @HolleyTrent #MFRWauthor

"He'd give up anything for love, including his father's favor."

MFRW Author Holley Trent released A Demon in Love (Sons of Gulielmus, 2), an Erotic Paranormal Romance with Crimson Romance on May 5, 2014.

Charles Edison has spent most of his 123 years courting women for Hell. As a faithful son of the demon Gulielmus, he’s never known true affection for women. Which is funny, seeing as how he’s descended from a love god on his mother’s side. Now that he sees his brother falling head over heels, Charles wants the same for himself. He wants to belong to someone.

Charles learns the woman destined for him is one he shouldn’t want. Marion Wilder’s family has been on the supernatural Most Wanted List for twenty-five years because they were responsible for the demise of a demon. Gulielmus would kill her if he had the chance.

But Marion’s the only human woman Charles can touch without harming. She’s his one chance at having a normal life and a real family, and he would give up anything to keep her. Even his father’s favor.

EXCERPT
“Montana’s a pretty inhospitable place, huh? There’s still a month until winter, but I don’t think the snow cares about timeliness.”
“Mm-hmm.” She patted her pockets in search of her keys. The next thing he’d probably say was that he could make it a lot more hospitable for her, if she had enough cash.
Prostitutes were pretty predictable, and she certainly got propositioned enough, though usually the truck stop hos were a little less—upright.
But, shit, did she really look like the kind of woman who’d pay a man for sex? She wrapped her fingers around the handle, prepared to slam the door.
He moved closer and grabbed the door’s edge before she could pull it. “Hey, why don’t you let me buy you a cup of coffee? You look like you could use a cup.”
“I don’t think so, dude.”
She could afford her own coffee, obviously, but no prostitute had ever offered to buy her anything. Must have been a new sales strategy—the hook ’em, then hump ’em.
She just wanted to get back on the road, but he was right. She did need to refill her thermos, fiend that she was. Coffee was her one vice, and she’d forgotten to take the canister into the restaurant with her during dinner. She didn’t want to give the guy the satisfaction, though, no matter how good he looked.
She let her gaze fall on him once again. He looked harmless enough, with his easy stance and hands jammed into the pockets of his coat. His boots were actually quite good quality. Brown leather with some scuffs. Broken in, and wet from snow, but they looked damned expensive. Didn’t seem like hand-me-downs, either. The heels were too good.
There must have been good money in truck stop whoring.
“No, thank you,” she finally managed, and gripped the door handle again after two failed attempts. “I-I need to get back on the road and get this load delivered.”
“Must be lonely,” he said. His grin waned slowly, and this time it was he who looked away, toward a truck entering the lot. He waited until it had circled around to the gas pumps.
“It’s a job,” she said when he looked up again. Damn, those eyes. They were so sad, and for some reason, that made her a little sad, too. “It is what it is.”
“Do you have a long drive ahead? Maybe you’d like some company for a while before you strike out.”
She opened her mouth to make some snarky retort, but closed it without letting the words pass her lips. Loneliness wasn’t really one of her temperatures, but curiosity was. What was the harm in a cup of coffee?
No, no. She wouldn’t go there. She was too smart for that. “Pretty long, yeah. But I’m used to it.”
“Are you on a deadline?”
“Of course I am. I get paid more if I get it there early.” Fat lot of good that extra money would do her. It’d be more money she wouldn’t spend, and she was becoming increasingly aware that the economy didn’t work that way.
“I promise I won’t hold you up long.”
“Sorry, no. I need to get moving.” It was as difficult as swimming against a tide, but somehow, she managed to close the door and start her ignition."

BOOK SPOTLIGHT: This Time Forever by #MFRWauthor Denise Devine @dmeinstad

MFRW Author Denise Devine released This Time Forever, a Mainstream Inspirational Romance on April 4, 2014.

Does time really heal all wounds?

Libby Cunningham has finally found the daughter her father forced her to give up for adoption nearly sixteen years ago. She has never forgiven herself and now desperately wants to make it up to Amber for the years they’ve lost. However, she has also learned that Cash MacKenzie, Amber’s father, has custody. Libby has never forgotten that Cash broke her teenage heart and deserted her when she needed him the most. Now he holds the key to her future happiness. Can she overcome her memories of the past or will her feelings jeopardize the present?

From Cash’s viewpoint, Libby couldn't have picked a worse time to intrude upon their lives. Amber’s rebellious attitude reminds him of Libby at that age. He doesn’t need interference from the woman who abandoned her own child and realizes he’s never forgiven her. What guarantee does he have that Libby won’t walk away from Amber a second time? Libby’s feelings for Amber may be genuine, but he will never allow her to hurt Amber—or him—ever again.
ExcerptLibby Cunningham had risked heartbreak before, but not like this. Never had she come so close to finding the child her father forced her to give up for adoption almost sixteen years ago. Years spent praying and trusting God for a breakthrough had led to disappointment again and again—but not tonight. This time her heart possessed an unexplainable peace, giving her renewed hope. Had God finally answered her plea?
Then she saw the girl.
“That can’t be my daughter,” Libby murmured as she watched a teenager ascend the stairs of a crowded bleacher at the River’s Edge High football game. “That young lady has someone else’s genes.”
Medley Grant reached over and squeezed her hand. “Lib, Lib, you’ve got to keep an open mind. I warned you that Amber might not be what you expected.”
The crowd roared and Amber MacKenzie pivoted, gazing down at the play in progress. Towering floodlights cast a silvery sheen upon the tall, slender girl wearing a neon pink sweater and hip-hugging jeans.
Waist-length hair hugged her shoulders and arms like a luxurious black shawl.
Libby studied every detail of the girl she could glean from a distance, desperate to find some connection. “I expected to see something of myself in her,” she confessed. Instead she’d come to a dead end, once again facing the reality that the odds of finding her daughter didn’t lean in her favor. “She doesn’t resemble me at all.”
“Yes, she does!” Medley leaned back and stared past Libby’s right shoulder, perusing Amber with a smile of approval. “She reminds me precisely of you at that age.”
On the field, River’s Edge cheerleaders led the raucous crowd into a frenzy of school spirit. Clad in maroon skirts and gold sweaters, they swung matching pom-poms and kicked their legs high. “Push ‘em back, push ‘em back, w-a-y-y-y back! G-o-o-o Otters!” Behind them, both teams joined arms in their respective huddles, discussing their next plays.
Libby ignored the game and the crush of boisterous spectators seated elbow-to-elbow on the hard, metal bleachers. The crisp, September evening provided perfect weather for football, but she and her cousin never intended to spend their time watching the game. They came here on a mission—to spy on Amber MacKenzie. Ever since the girl walked into Medley’s salon last week to get a trim, Medley had pressured Libby to attend this event and observe Amber for herself.
Libby twisted at the waist, her gaze sliding from Amber back to her cousin. “What do you see that I don’t? I’m blonde and fair. She’s so...totally like her father.”
Medley paused, holding a couple kernels of popcorn to her burgundy-tinted lips. “She inherited Cash MacKenzie’s looks, but I see other ways you two are exactly alike. That day she came into the salon, I noticed aspects about her that reminded me of you. She has your tall, slender frame. You both frown the same way when you’re reading. Oh, and another thing,” Medley paused to sip her soda, “Amber’s voice...”
Medley’s fine, penciled brows arched. “She sounds exactly like you.”
“I wish I knew for sure.” Libby sighed and looked away, not wanting Medley to see her doubt. A couple of similar attributes didn’t prove a thing. “If she’s almost sixteen she could be mine. If she’s younger, then she’s his daughter by someone else.”
Even though it happened long ago, the thought of Cash MacKenzie marrying so soon after he’d severed all ties with her still touched a nerve. How could he have forgotten her so easily? Had he been seeing someone else all along? That could explain why he’d turned his back on her when she needed him the most...
She stared hard at Amber, wishing with all her heart this girl could be the one. For a moment, she dared to entertain the possibility.
“All these years I’ve believed total strangers adopted my baby,” she declared. “If, in fact, Amber is my child and her own father raised her...” Libby’s throat tightened as a simple question hovered in her mind. How did Cash end up with Amber? The only answer possible proved difficult to bear. The people closest to her, the ones she’d trusted, had deceived her.

“First aid kit?” she asked in a no nonsense voice.
“In the bathroom. Under the sink.” He nodded in that direction.
When she took off to find it, he carefully peeled back his shirt and frowned. The cut was nasty, but not too deep. He wouldn’t need stitches, but it would have to be wrapped and he’d probably need to go see Doctor Marks first thing on Monday. Maybe get a rabies shot or something.
A gasp from the doorway shot through him like a bullet. He yanked his shirt down but it was too late; he could tell by the expression on her face, she’d seen. “It’s not bad,” he said in a light voice.
She snorted and dumped gauze, peroxide, antiseptic and tape on the bed.
And then she dropped to her knees before him.
Holy Jesus God. She dropped to her knees before him. In his bedroom.
His mortification that she’d seen his scars was swept away by a devastating lust. He nearly lost consciousness. Despite the fact he was in pain, his cock rose.
What was it about this woman?
On her knees before him?
“It needs tending,” she said, ripping open a package of gauze and setting it aside. “Lift your shirt.”
He cringed.
Lift his shirt?
On purpose?
In front of a woman?
A woman he wanted to—
“Lift. Your. Shirt.” Her tone brooked no refusal.
“Kaitlin…” He should warn her. She’d seen it, but maybe she hadn’t really seen it.
“Parker, I need to get some peroxide on it and quickly. Please. Lift your shirt.”
Well hell.
It had been a nice fantasy, while it lasted. Once she saw, she’d run screeching the other way. They all did. Or, if they didn’t screech, their noses would curl up and their faces would go all cold. And then they’d quietly run away.
Slowly, he pulled up the hem.
And hell. Yes. Her nose wrinkled.
But she didn’t run.
She touched him. She touched his scars—mottled and discolored and ugly—thumbing them gently. “Hmm,” she said, turning away to open the bottle of hydrogen peroxide and soaking the gauze with it. She met his gaze saying, “This will be cold,” before daubing it on his cut.
He flinched when she touched him.
“Sorry,” she muttered. “Did that hurt?”
“No.” It didn’t hurt. But then, it wouldn’t.
Most of the nerves there were dead. The only place it burned was on the sides, where his scars weren’t quite so thick.
She gently dabbed at him, making sure to get the antiseptic over the whole cut. “I’m going to cover this, but I need to wrap it around your waist,” she said. “It will be easier if you take off your shirt.”
God. No.
His belly was bad enough. But the rest of him?
“Kaitlin…”
“I need to do your arm too.”
“I can do my arm.”
She sent him a mocking pout. “Parker, let me help you. You helped me last night. It would be my honor to return the favor.”
God bless her. She was so damn sincere and genuine. How could he explain?
“I don’t like taking off my shirt,” he said. Well, that didn’t explain much. Then again, it explained everything. “These scars…” He waved to his exposed stomach. Hell he could barely stand to look at it himself. He hated the way he looked. Had since he was five.
“Yes?”
He sucked in a breath, steeling his spine. “I have them…all over.”
She set her hand on his knee. Her jaw went slack. Her eyes glazed over. “Wow,” she said after a long moment. She cleared her throat. “That must have hurt a lot.”
He cracked a grin. He did not know why. “Yes. Yes it did.”
“Okay. Now take off your shirt.”
“Kaitlin…”
“Just do it, Parker. Let me wrap this up and then you can put your armor back on.” This she said gently, with no discernible derision. It was horrifying how she seemed to see right through to his soul. Then again, it was comforting as well.
Which was probably why he did it…why he took the hem of his shirt in his hands and pulled it off. Exposing himself to another human—not in the medical profession—for the first time in years.

13 Mistakes I Made
On the way to publication by Martha O’Sullivan

1. I thought I needed an agent.
2. I thought I had to go through traditional publishing and print channels.
3. I thought Harlequin ruled the world.
4. I should have brought The Emotion Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman and Becca Pu-glist before I wrote my first book instead of when I was editing my second.
5. I underestimated how generous, supportive and welcoming writers were.
6. I should have gone to RWA Nationals the year I started writing. I should have joined TARA from the get-go.
7. I should have kept reading. I started writing at night instead of reading.
8. I should always write the last chapter first. I should have known this since I find my-self reading the last few pages of a book midway through chapter two.
9. I should have joined a critique group.
10. I should have shouted that I was writing from the rooftops instead of keeping it to myself.
11. I should have known the last rejection hurts just as much as the first one.
12. I should have known that writing the book was the easy part.
13. I knew how bad I wanted it, so I should have known I would do it.

But the one thing I did right? I never gave up! And here I am!

Martha O'Sullivan's latest release, SECOND CHANCE, a Contemporary Romance, was published in September 2013 with Red Sage Publishing.

SECOND CHANCE

Get To Know WENDY LYNN CLARK @MFRWorg May Featured Author

Meet Wendy

Wendy Lynn Clark is an award-winning author of romance, young adult, and science fiction. A lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, she graduated magna cum laude from Lewis & Clark College with a degree in philosophy and a minor in English, volunteered with AmeriCorps, taught English in Japan with the JET Programme for three years, and resided abroad in England and Greece. After completing a master’s degree at the University of Brighton, she returned to books and now works in an academic library. She loves learning about cultures, from how different families live in her local neighborhood to how astronauts live on the International Space Station. She is drawn to write about the needs that unite us all—survival, family, adventure, and love.

Wendy's Life as a Writer
No one is happier when I'm writing than my two cats.

One is a fat young calico who turned up pregnant on my front door last year - sounds like the start of a romance novel! - and one is a skinny old caliby (calico + tabby - it's a real word, I swear!) I adopted from a train station in Japan eleven years ago where she had been abandoned.

I draft story ideas in a notebook, but I "write" on a netbook on my couch. I have a big lap so usually the netbook leaves enough room for my old caliby to snuggle up. My fat young calico hasn't quite gotten comfortable enough to squish in, so she curls up next to us. Surrounded by purring cats, fuzzy throws, and a hot cup of sencha or Tetley's English tea, I finish a session of writing feeling like I've had a massage + float therapy + waking meditation.
